doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a couch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I knew before she explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy apartment?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna\u2019s hand tightened around the wooden box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s writing on the back,\u201d Rebecca said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca paused.<\/p>\n<p>Then read:<\/p>\n<p>He never knew I took this. Anna had fallen asleep beside him. I looked at them and understood they loved each other. I wish I had been brave enough to leave their lives alone.<\/p>\n<p>The truck became completely silent.<\/p>\n<p>Carol had been there.<\/p>\n<p>Before Ruth\u2019s threats.<\/p>\n<p>Before Anna left.<\/p>\n<p>Before the adoption.<\/p>\n<p>Carol had seen us together.<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was the photo taken?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat date?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca read it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApril 27, 1985.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>That was months before I proposed.<\/p>\n<p>Months before she became pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>Months before Ruth supposedly asked Carol to help with a \u201csituation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I whispered, \u201cCarol knew you before any of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna looked shaken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you she was around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the letter in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wasn\u2019t just around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca asked, \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>But suddenly another piece of the story had shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Carol\u2019s involvement had not begun when Ruth sent her to Anna.<\/p>\n<p>It had begun earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe much earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Anna slowly opened the wooden box in her lap.<\/p>\n<p>Inside lay the ring I had given her.<\/p>\n<p>And beneath it, folded into a tiny square, was a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Anna lifted it out.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>She unfolded it.<\/p>\n<p>A younger Carol stood outside Grace Methodist beside Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, in Anna\u2019s handwriting, was a date.<\/p>\n<p>April 20, 1985.<\/p>\n<p>One week before Carol photographed Anna and me asleep together.<\/p>\n<p>Anna looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI forgot I had this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the image.<\/p>\n<p>Carol was smiling.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth had one arm around her shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>And beneath the date, Anna had written a note to herself forty-one years ago:<\/p>\n<p>Ruth\u2019s friend Carol asked again whether Walter and I were serious.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Carol had not entered our story after Anna left.<\/p>\n<p>She had been watching it unfold before either of us knew she mattered.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=21973\">Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Photograph Proved Carol Had Known About Anna Before Ruth Intervened, and the Reason She Watched Us Was Harder to Hear<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cRebecca.\u201d \u201cNo.\u201d Her voice sounded far away through the truck speakers.
