twenty.”

“So was she.”

That silenced me.

Carol had been young too.

We kept judging every decision with the knowledge of forty years.

It did not excuse them.

But it changed their shape.

“Did you two argue?”

“Yes.”

“About me?”

“About Rebecca.”

“What did Carol say?”

“That motherhood was not biology.”

I felt a flash of defensiveness.

“She was right.”

Anna nodded.

“She was.”

That surprised me.

“She said she had been there for every scraped knee, every fever, every birthday, every heartbreak.”

“She was.”

“I told her I had never claimed otherwise.”

“What did she say?”

“That truth could make Rebecca look at every memory differently.”

I understood that too.

“It will.”

“Yes.”

“But memory changing isn’t the same as memory becoming false.”

Anna looked at me.

“That is almost exactly what I told her.”

I swallowed.

“What happened after the argument?”

“Carol calmed down.”

“And?”

“She apologized.”

“For what?”

“For asking me to lie.”

The road hummed beneath the tires.

“She said she knew she had run out of time.”

My throat tightened.

“Then why didn’t she tell us?”

“Because she wanted one more week.”

“One more week.”

“Yes.”

“Then another?”

Anna looked away.

“Probably.”

Of course.

Human cowardice rarely declares itself as forever.

It asks for seven more days.

Then seven more.

“What changed?”

“Rebecca contacted me.”

“In June.”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell Carol?”

“Not immediately.”

“When?”

“July.”

“And that is when she asked you to wait.”

“Yes.”

“She knew the secret was collapsing.”

“Yes.”

“Did she ever say she would tell me before she died?”

“Many times.”

I gripped the wheel.

“Last question.”

Anna nodded.

“When she came in April, did she bring anything?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“A sealed envelope.”

My head turned.

“For you?”

“For me.”

“What was inside?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why?”

“She told me not to open it unless she died without telling you.”

I slowed.

“Where is it?”

Anna looked at the wooden box.

“Not in here.”

“Where?”

“My bag.”

My mouth went dry.

“You brought it?”

“Yes.”

“Have you opened it?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because Carol asked me to give it to you sealed.”

I stared ahead.

“You have a letter from my wife sitting behind my seat.”

“Yes.”

“When were you planning to tell me?”

“When we got to Millfield.”

“Give it to me now.”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“Anna.”

“You’re driving.”

“I can pull over.”

“It has waited five months.”

“That is not helping.”

“We are an hour from the next safe rest area.”

I almost laughed.

“Forty years of secrecy and now everyone is concerned with highway safety.”

Anna actually smiled.

“Somebody should be.”

I shook my head.

“Fine.”

For twenty minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then rain began.

Light at first.

Then heavier.

I slowed the truck.

The world beyond the windshield blurred silver.

Anna reached into the back seat and pulled forward her bag.

I glanced at her.

“What are you doing?”

“Changing my mind.”

She opened the zipper and removed a cream-colored envelope.

Carol’s handwriting was on the front.

Walter.

That was all.

My breath caught.

Anna held it against her lap.

“You can have it at the next exit.”

I stared at the road.

The envelope seemed louder than the rain.

“What if it explains everything?”

Anna answered softly.

“It won’t.”

“How do you know?”

“Because nothing explains forty years.”

She was right.

Ten minutes later, I pulled into an abandoned gas station beneath a rusted awning.

The rain hammered the roof.

Anna handed me the envelope.

I turned it over.

Still sealed.

Carol’s fingerprints might have been on it.

Her breath.

Her last attempt.

I slid my finger beneath the flap.

Inside were three pages.

The first sentence was written in the steady handwriting Carol had before the disease and medication weakened her.

Walter,

If Anna is giving you this, then I failed to do the bravest thing I ever owed you while I was alive.

I stopped reading.

Anna looked toward the windshield.

I continued.

I loved you every day of our marriage. That is true. I loved Rebecca from the first moment I held her. That is also true. And I built both loves on a lie I told myself I would correct tomorrow.

My vision blurred.

I lowered the letter.

Rainwater rushed along the gutter outside.

Anna said nothing.

I read the next line.

The worst thing I did was not keeping Anna’s secret when I was young. The worst thing was understanding, year after year, that the secret had become mine.

I closed my eyes.

Carol had finally said it.

Not Ruth.

Not Anna.

Carol.

Hers.

When I looked down again, the next paragraph began with words that made my stomach drop.

There is something about the adoption papers Walter must know before Rebecca sees them.

I stopped breathing.

Anna turned.

“What?”

I handed her the page.

She read the line.

Her face changed.

“What adoption papers?”

“I don’t know.”

The rain struck harder.

I scanned the next paragraph.

Carol had written only one more sentence before continuing on the next page.

Franklin Dale changed more than the father’s name.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Carol’s Letter Pointed to a Hidden Adoption Record, and What Franklin Dale Changed Threatened to Rewrite More Than Rebecca’s Birth

The highway stretched ahead of us beneath a lowering sky.
