hesitated.

Then she read the words that had apparently been waiting forty years for me to hear.

“Someday, when Walter knows, give this back to Anna.”

I closed my eyes.

Carol had preserved the proof.

Not destroyed it.

Not forgotten it.

Preserved it.

“What hospital bracelet?” I asked.

Rebecca’s voice dropped.

“It has my mother’s name.”

I already knew.

Still, I asked.

“What name?”

“Anna Mercer.”

The street seemed to tilt.

I sat down hard on the bench.

Rebecca said, “Dad?”

“I’m here.”

“What does it mean?”

I looked at Anna.

Her eyes were wet.

For the first time since the diner, I understood that the next truth was mine to tell.

Not Ruth’s.

Not Carol’s.

Not Anna’s.

Mine.

“Rebecca,” I said carefully, “I need you to come to Millfield tonight.”

“Why?”

“Because what I’m about to tell you belongs face-to-face.”

“Dad, you’re scaring me.”

“I know.”

“Is Anna my mother?”

“Yes.”

Rebecca inhaled shakily.

She had already known, but hearing me confirm it changed something.

“And my father?”

I closed my eyes.

Forty years of birthdays moved through me.

Rebecca at five blowing candles.

At twelve breaking her wrist.

At sixteen learning to drive.

At twenty-three walking across a graduation stage.

At twenty-eight asking me to walk her down an aisle.

At forty standing in Carol’s hospital room with those unmistakable green eyes.

My daughter.

Always my daughter.

“Dad?”

I opened my eyes.

Anna watched me.

I said, “Come home, Rebecca.”

“Why won’t you answer?”

“Because I want to be there when you hear it.”

“Dad.”

My voice broke anyway.

“Please trust me one more night.”

Rebecca was quiet.

Then she whispered, “Okay.”

I ended the call.

Anna sat beside me.

Neither of us spoke for a long time.

Finally she said, “You’re going to tell her.”

“Yes.”

“You should.”

“I know.”

I looked at the road.

Then at Anna.

“But first I need to know everything Carol left out.”

Anna nodded.

“All right.”

“No more protecting me.”

“No.”

“No more promises to dead people.”

Anna looked toward the diner.

Then back at me.

“There is one thing I haven’t told you.”

Of course there was.

I almost laughed.

“What?”

She took a slow breath.

“The reason Carol waited until she was dying wasn’t only fear.”

My stomach tightened.

“What else?”

“She believed Ruth had destroyed the last proof that you were Rebecca’s father.”

I frowned.

“What proof?”

Anna’s eyes shifted toward the road.

“A letter.”

“From who?”

“Your mother.”

My hands went cold.

“What letter?”

“The one Ruth wrote to me after Rebecca was born.”

I stared.

“What did it say?”

Anna swallowed.

“That she had made a terrible mistake.”

My heart began hammering.

“And?”

“That you were never supposed to know Rebecca existed.”

A chill moved through me.

“But that wasn’t the worst part.”

“What was?”

Anna looked straight at me.

“She admitted Carol had tried to tell you once.”

I could not breathe.

“When?”

Anna’s voice lowered.

“The night before you married her.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Anna’s Claim About My Wedding Night Forced Me to Revisit the
