Carol had dropped it against a rock and insisted the dent improved its personality.

I ran my thumb over it at the first rest stop.

Even while driving toward Anna, I was carrying Carol with me.

The irony might have amused her.

Or perhaps that had been the point.

The farther north I drove, the flatter the landscape became. September had begun changing the edges of the trees. Red appeared first in the maples, then orange along the hills.

I passed exits, fuel stations, barns, and towns whose names meant nothing to me.

For hours I tried to decide what I believed.

Maybe Carol had helped Anna after our breakup.

Maybe Ruth had intimidated Anna for reasons that seemed important in 1985 and ridiculous now.

Maybe Rebecca’s adoption was unrelated.

Maybe Anna’s son had simply arrived during our call.

Every explanation worked until I placed all the facts together.

Then none of them did.

At ten forty-seven, I reached Harbor Ridge.

It was smaller than Millfield.

Two traffic lights.

A hardware store.

A library in an old brick building.

The diner sat beside a pharmacy exactly as Anna had described.

A faded sign above the door read HARBOR RIDGE GRILL.

I parked across the street.

For almost five minutes I remained inside the truck.

My hands rested on the steering wheel.

I had imagined seeing Anna again hundreds of times in the first years after she disappeared.

In some versions, she apologized.

In others, I did.

Sometimes she had married someone else.

Sometimes she regretted leaving.

Eventually those fantasies stopped.

Life replaced them.

Carol replaced them.

Rebecca replaced them.

Work, mortgages, illnesses, birthdays, arguments, funerals, vacations, broken water heaters, grandchildren.

Forty years of ordinary life built a wall around the question.

Now I was about to walk through it.

At eleven exactly, I entered the diner.

The place smelled of coffee, bacon grease, and cinnamon.

A waitress behind the counter pointed toward a booth without asking my name.

“She’s in the back.”

I looked.

Anna sat beneath a window.

For a moment, I saw only the woman she had become.

Silver threaded through her dark hair, which she wore shorter now. Fine lines framed her mouth. Her shoulders were narrower than I remembered.

Then she looked up.

The years disappeared in pieces.

The eyes were the same.

Not identical.

Older.

But unmistakable.

Green with a ring of gold around the pupils.

My feet stopped.

Anna stood.

Neither of us moved toward the other.

“Hello, Walt.”

“Hello.”

That was all.

Forty years and that was all we managed.

I sat across from her.

A cup of coffee waited at my place.

“You remembered,” I said.

“Black.
