My wife is dead. My mother is dead. Anna disappeared forty years ago. Everybody who seems to know what happened keeps telling me it belongs to somebody else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot for all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Anna left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Diane continued. \u201cYour mother went to see her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore the letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long before?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to ask Anna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Ruth say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did my mother say to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane hesitated so long that I nearly shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she said, \u201cEnough to frighten a twenty-year-old woman into believing she could ruin her entire family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood without knowing why.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was there after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRuth taught Sunday school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe collected money for families when their houses burned down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe helped your father\u2014Anna\u2019s father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane interrupted. \u201cGood people can still do terrible things when they convince themselves they\u2019re protecting somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed my free hand against the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtecting me from what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Anna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room tilted slightly.<\/p>\n<p>I sat again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know everything Ruth believed. Anna\u2019s family didn\u2019t have money. Her father was in trouble at work. Her sister had just become engaged. Your mother knew all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that have to do with anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word landed heavily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying Ruth knew where to apply pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared toward the dark window.<\/p>\n<p>For forty years I had remembered Anna\u2019s letter as the uncomplicated act of someone who changed her mind.<\/p>\n<p>Now another version of that year began forming around it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t Anna tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe could have called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe believed things you don\u2019t understand yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have protected her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were moving away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have stayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew where I was.
