Security cameras hung beneath the eaves.<\/p>\n<p>But the shape of the place struck me instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Two floors.<\/p>\n<p>Exterior doors.<\/p>\n<p>Office at the center.<\/p>\n<p>My body recognized it before my mind did.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped near the parking lot entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Russell stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We walked toward the office.<\/p>\n<p>A woman in her forties sat behind plexiglass drinking from a silver tumbler.<\/p>\n<p>She looked suspiciously at us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeed a room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m trying to find out something about the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou buying it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I showed her the old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis place used to be Hillcrest Motor Lodge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong before my time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo the room numbers match the old layout?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She studied the picture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoom 17?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward the ground floor at the far end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow 117.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs anyone staying there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I chose the truth closest to what she needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family owned the property briefly years ago. I have documents connected to that room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman glanced at Russell.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou law enforcement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReporter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoom\u2019s empty right now, but I\u2019m not letting strangers inspect rooms because of some old family story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gave the manager Nathan\u2019s number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you speak to our attorney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll speak to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, after Nathan explained enough to sound legitimate without sounding insane, the manager agreed to let us enter while she accompanied us.<\/p>\n<p>Her name was Carla Nguyen.<\/p>\n<p>She carried a master key and kept her phone in one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf either of you starts tearing up drywall, you\u2019re paying for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not tearing anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Room 117 smelled of bleach and stale air-conditioning.<\/p>\n<p>The bedspread was gray.<\/p>\n<p>Television mounted to the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing looked like 1978.<\/p>\n<p>Yet when I stepped inside, my knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ice machine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carla pointed outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsed to be there, according to old plumbing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exactly where I remembered it.<\/p>\n<p>Russell watched my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I crossed to the bathroom.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>There should have been a closet.<\/p>\n<p>There was.<\/p>\n<p>Different door.<\/p>\n<p>Same location.<\/p>\n<p>I touched the frame.<\/p>\n<p>A memory flickered.<\/p>\n<p>Michael pushing me toward the closet.<\/p>\n<p>Stay quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hid here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then another fragment.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne\u2019s voice outside.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Weaver shouting.<\/p>\n<p>Something heavy striking a wall.<\/p>\n<p>Mama telling me not to move.<\/p>\n<p>I opened my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were four people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMama. Tom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carla folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is getting stranger by the minute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not the strangest thing that\u2019s happened in this motel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the wall beside the closet.<\/p>\n<p>In the old photograph, the room door had been the same distance from the corner.<\/p>\n<p>The dimensions had not changed much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s behind this wall?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carla frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlways?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as I know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched the baseboard.<\/p>\n<p>One section looked newer.<\/p>\n<p>Not new.<\/p>\n<p>But different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas this renovated?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlenty of times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell crouched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carla turned on her phone flashlight.<\/p>\n<p>Near the floor, partly hidden by paint, someone had carved two letters.<\/p>\n<p>MC.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Or Michael Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I appreciated him saying it.<\/p>\n<p>For once, he was not turning possibility into certainty.<\/p>\n<p>Carla said, \u201cThere\u2019s an old maintenance room behind 117 and 118.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we see it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Nathan says yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The maintenance room was accessible from outside.<\/p>\n<p>Its lock resisted before Carla forced it open.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were shelves of paint, cleaning chemicals, broken lamps, and old plumbing parts.<\/p>\n<p>The back wall was unfinished cinder block.<\/p>\n<p>The wall shared with Room 117 had drywall.<\/p>\n<p>Russell ran his flashlight across it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A rectangular patch.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly twelve inches square.<\/p>\n<p>Carla said, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t touched it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re looking at it like you want to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called Nathan.<\/p>\n<p>He told us not to open it.<\/p>\n<p>Not without permission in writing.<\/p>\n<p>Carla called the motel owner.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes passed.<\/p>\n<p>Then thirty.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she returned with an email authorizing removal of the patched section so long as we paid repair costs.<\/p>\n<p>Russell borrowed a utility knife from maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet Carla do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Carla cut along the edge.<\/p>\n<p>The patch came away more easily than expected.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was insulation.<\/p>\n<p>Then plastic.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou people owe me a drink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pulled out a plastic-wrapped bundle.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were two cassette tapes.<\/p>\n<p>A small notebook.<\/p>\n<p>And a motel key stamped 17.<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>The notebook belonged to Michael.<\/p>\n<p>His name was written inside.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>August 1978.<\/p>\n<p>I called Nathan again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not read it aloud over the phone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if it contains accusations against living people, I want context before conclusions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have become very cautious since last night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI became cautious the moment you found evidence of financial crimes, possible assault, possible fraud, and a hidden adoption in one storage unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carla stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he say hidden adoption?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ignored that.<\/p>\n<p>We took photographs before moving anything.<\/p>\n<p>Then I opened Michael\u2019s notebook.<\/p>\n<p>The first pages were ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>Work shifts.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts owed.<\/p>\n<p>A list of songs.<\/p>\n<p>Then Hillcrest appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne says Tom will fix it.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t trust Tom.<\/p>\n<p>Mama came again today.<\/p>\n<p>He called her Mama.<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Not Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>Not Mrs. Harper.<\/p>\n<p>Mama.<\/p>\n<p>Michael knew.<\/p>\n<p>He knew she had given birth to him.<\/p>\n<p>The next entry:<\/p>\n<p>Daniel wants me to leave town.<\/p>\n<p>I told him I\u2019m done running.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne owes me more than money.<\/p>\n<p>Russell whispered, \u201cWhat did Wayne owe him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>The answer appeared several pages later.<\/p>\n<p>Michael had worked for Wayne and Tom at Hillcrest.<\/p>\n<p>Not officially.<\/p>\n<p>Cash jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Repairs.<\/p>\n<p>Deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>Night desk.<\/p>\n<p>Then he discovered they were using empty rooms for something else.<\/p>\n<p>Not prostitution.<\/p>\n<p>Not drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne and Tom staged burglaries.<\/p>\n<p>Guests\u2019 property disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Claims were filed.<\/p>\n<p>Some guests participated.<\/p>\n<p>Some did not.<\/p>\n<p>Michael wrote that Daniel found out and demanded it stop.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the entry that changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>August 21.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne knows I kept copies of the ledgers. He threatened Mama today. Said he\u2019d tell Robert about me and ruin her family if she didn\u2019t help him transfer Hillcrest.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Russell stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Mama owned the motel because Wayne forced her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another entry.<\/p>\n<p>August 24.<\/p>\n<p>Linda saw Tom hit me.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room tilt.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>Not of every memory.<\/p>\n<p>But enough.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Michael opening Room 17 with blood on his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Weaver had hit him.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>The next page answered.<\/p>\n<p>Tom thinks I told Linda too much.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t tell her anything. She heard them arguing.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne wanted Mama to bring her so she could swear she hadn\u2019t seen anything.<\/p>\n<p>Russell muttered, \u201cJesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>Mama cried in the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne told her if she refused the property transfer, he\u2019d make sure Michael got arrested for theft.<\/p>\n<p>Michael had stolen?<\/p>\n<p>The next line clarified.<\/p>\n<p>He planted the missing cash in my car.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne had controlled people through accusations.<\/p>\n<p>Russell through stolen money.<\/p>\n<p>Mama through Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Michael through planted evidence.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern was not accidental.<\/p>\n<p>It was method.<\/p>\n<p>Carla had stopped pretending not to listen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour stepfather sounds charming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The final entries were frantic.<\/p>\n<p>Michael planned to take evidence to Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>He no longer trusted local police because Tom Weaver\u2019s cousin worked there.<\/p>\n<p>He had hidden copies \u201cwhere Wayne won\u2019t look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This wall.<\/p>\n<p>Then one final entry.<\/p>\n<p>September 3, 1978.<\/p>\n<p>If anything happens to me, Daniel knows about the river.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat river?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>Carla said, \u201cThere are about twelve around here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The notebook ended there.<\/p>\n<p>No later entries.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Nathan through the phone screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you find out what happened to Michael Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m searching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow have we not asked this already?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause until last night we didn\u2019t know he existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carla leaned against the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWasn\u2019t he in your family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan was quiet for almost two minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cI found Michael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>The word hit me harder than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda, before I give you the address, there\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe changed his surname.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRhodes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRhodes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael Mercer became Michael Rhodes in 1982.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same surname as Calvin Rhodes.<\/p>\n<p>The driver who hit me.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down on an overturned paint bucket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Calvin his father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRelative?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m checking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell whispered, \u201cWhat if Calvin adopted him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael would have been twenty-two in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>Too old.<\/p>\n<p>Then Nathan found the connection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalvin Rhodes had an older sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was her name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed once, without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother Evelyn?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn Rhodes Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went still.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s adoptive mother.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin Rhodes was her younger brother.<\/p>\n<p>Which meant the man who hit me was Michael\u2019s adoptive uncle.<\/p>\n<p>And Daniel\u2019s uncle.<\/p>\n<p>And the brother of the woman who had adopted Mama\u2019s first child.<\/p>\n<p>My accident had not happened near strangers.<\/p>\n<p>It happened inside a web of people our family already knew.<\/p>\n<p>Russell sat beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis can\u2019t all be coincidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Michael\u2019s final notebook entry.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel knows about the river.<\/p>\n<p>Then I turned to the first cassette recovered from the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Its label contained only one word.<\/p>\n<p>CALVIN.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=21890\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Calvin Rhodes\u2019s Hidden Recording Revealed Why He Could Never Tell Police What Happened the Night His Truck Hit Me<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I woke before dawn in a motel room six miles from the storage facility with the number seventeen burning in my head.
