over.

Below Daniel’s name was a Nashville address.

Nathan said quietly through the phone, “Do not contact him tonight.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m looking at public records.”

“So?”

Nathan’s voice changed.

“There is something you need to know about Daniel Mercer before you walk into his house.”

“What?”

“His mother Evelyn died in 1984.”

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“She left him an estate.”

I waited.

Nathan continued.

“One property in that estate had previously belonged to Wayne Harper.”

I looked at Russell.

“A property where?”

“Nashville.”

“What kind?”

“A motel.”

The photograph in my hand suddenly felt heavier.

A memory surfaced.

Years ago, while cleaning Mama’s Bible, I had found an old picture tucked between Psalms.

Mama standing beside Wayne.

A motel behind them.

And between them, a teenage boy I did not recognize.

I had asked who he was.

Mama snatched the photograph away.

“Just somebody we knew.”

I had forgotten about it.

Until now.

“I’ve seen that motel,” I whispered.

Russell stared at me.

“What?”

“In a photograph.”

“What photograph?”

“One Mama hid.”

Nathan said, “Linda, there’s another connection.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“What?”

“The motel changed hands in 1978.”

The same year Evelyn Mercer paid Wayne six thousand dollars.

“Who bought it?”

Nathan answered.

“Your mother.”

I stopped breathing.

Russell whispered, “Mama owned a motel?”

“No,” Nathan said. “Not for long.”

“How long?”

“Eleven days.”

Lightning flashed again.

Nathan continued.

“Then Evelyn Harper transferred it to Daniel Mercer’s mother for one dollar.”

No one spoke.

A transaction that made no sense.

A payment from Daniel’s mother to Wayne.

Mama temporarily owning Wayne’s property.

Then giving it away.

Daniel later helping Wayne move my settlement money.

Whatever had happened began before my accident.

Possibly before Wayne ever insured me.

I looked again at the six envelopes in the black box.

Mama had not built this trail to tell me one secret.

She had built it because one secret was hiding another.

And somewhere inside those boxes was the reason a respectable lawyer had risked his career to protect the man who pushed me into traffic.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Before I Could Confront Daniel
