Harper truck \u2014 not logged.<\/p>\n<p>The envelope Officer Shaw saw Tom hand Wayne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was in it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No clue.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed a handwritten note at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Shaw asked T.W. in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>T.W. states envelope contained photocopy of bank record involving R.C.<\/p>\n<p>R.C.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Carter?<\/p>\n<p>Russell Carter?<\/p>\n<p>Both.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich R.C.?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell whispered, \u201cMaybe me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat bank record would Tom have about you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy withdrawal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForty-five hundred?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But why hand it to Wayne at the accident scene?<\/p>\n<p>Then something clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne had leverage over Russell before the accident.<\/p>\n<p>Cheryl.<\/p>\n<p>Stolen money.<\/p>\n<p>But the settlement withdrawal happened after the accident.<\/p>\n<p>So not that.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Carter.<\/p>\n<p>A bank record involving my father.<\/p>\n<p>The white envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The check.<\/p>\n<p>I felt a chill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if R.C. is Robert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBank record showing payments?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe Wayne meeting Tom to discuss Robert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore you told Wayne you\u2019d tell me about Tom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wayne already knew I had found Robert\u2019s envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he was meeting Tom because he feared that one secret would expose the others.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan searched the final pages.<\/p>\n<p>No brown envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Missing.<\/p>\n<p>Tom\u2019s hidden file preserved almost everything except the one item exchanged at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ellis spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said this bundle was under the bell thirty years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApproximately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen there\u2019s another compartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed at the metal cavity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChurch people hid offering records down there during renovations. Two shelves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We had only removed the upper box.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan crouched again.<\/p>\n<p>Reached deeper.<\/p>\n<p>His fingers struck metal.<\/p>\n<p>A second package.<\/p>\n<p>Smaller.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a brown envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Age-darkened.<\/p>\n<p>Sealed.<\/p>\n<p>Initials across the flap.<\/p>\n<p>T.W.<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat hammered.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan photographed it.<\/p>\n<p>Opened carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a bank photocopy.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Deposit records from 1978.<\/p>\n<p>Payments totaling twelve hundred dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Source account:<\/p>\n<p>Wayne Harper.<\/p>\n<p>Proof of Wayne paying Robert for family information.<\/p>\n<p>But there was another page.<\/p>\n<p>A personal check.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Carter to Thomas Weaver.<\/p>\n<p>Five hundred dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Memo line:<\/p>\n<p>RUSSELL.<\/p>\n<p>My brother went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dated 1963.<\/p>\n<p>Three years after Russell was born.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>Another check.<\/p>\n<p>1964.<\/p>\n<p>Five hundred.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>1965.<\/p>\n<p>Same amount.<\/p>\n<p>Robert had been paying Tom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d Russell whispered.<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw the notation attached.<\/p>\n<p>Tom\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>R.C. pays yearly so I stay away from boy.<\/p>\n<p>Russell sat down hard.<\/p>\n<p>His face emptied.<\/p>\n<p>Robert knew.<\/p>\n<p>Not merely suspected.<\/p>\n<p>He knew Tom was Russell\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>And paid him to stay away.<\/p>\n<p>For years.<\/p>\n<p>Everything we had heard about Robert changed again.<\/p>\n<p>He had been deceived.<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Angry.<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Exploitative later.<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>But for a time, he had chosen to raise Russell and keep Tom away.<\/p>\n<p>Not purely from love.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe partly pride.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe fear of scandal.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe both.<\/p>\n<p>Human motives refused to stay clean.<\/p>\n<p>Russell stared at the checks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe paid Tom to leave me alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t just resent me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I understood why Wayne wanted the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>If Russell ever saw those records, Robert\u2019s story would become more complicated.<\/p>\n<p>So would Tom\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>So would Mama\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne benefited when everyone believed only the ugliest version of each other.<\/p>\n<p>It kept them isolated.<\/p>\n<p>Easier to control.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan turned over the final document.<\/p>\n<p>A letter from Tom to Robert.<\/p>\n<p>1966.<\/p>\n<p>Robert,<\/p>\n<p>I will stay away if that is what Evelyn wants. Stop paying me.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Tom had asked him to stop.<\/p>\n<p>The annual payments ended.<\/p>\n<p>Russell whispered, \u201cHe walked away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen later helped Wayne use me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Contradictions again.<\/p>\n<p>The room offered no easy villains except Wayne.<\/p>\n<p>Even Tom had moments where he did something decent before doing terrible things later.<\/p>\n<p>The final sheet in the envelope was not from 1978.<\/p>\n<p>It was 1991.<\/p>\n<p>Tom wrote:<\/p>\n<p>Wayne keeps this because he wants Russell to think every man in his life only used him.<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Below that:<\/p>\n<p>If Russell ever sees these checks, tell him I stayed away because Evelyn asked me to.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>Tell him I regretted it before I died.<\/p>\n<p>Russell covered his face.<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside him.<\/p>\n<p>Not touching.<\/p>\n<p>Just there.<\/p>\n<p>After a long time, he whispered, \u201cI don\u2019t know what to do with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to do anything today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan carefully repacked the file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have enough now to establish a documented chain for the accident cover-up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the pages.<\/p>\n<p>Witness statements.<\/p>\n<p>Payments.<\/p>\n<p>Police interference.<\/p>\n<p>Hospital manipulation.<\/p>\n<p>Settlement money used afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.<\/p>\n<p>But Mama\u2019s central trail was not finished.<\/p>\n<p>I knew because one question remained.<\/p>\n<p>Why had she kept eighteen thousand nine hundred forty dollars instead of giving it to me while alive?<\/p>\n<p>Not only guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Not only fear.<\/p>\n<p>Something had stopped her.<\/p>\n<p>Or someone.<\/p>\n<p>As if answering me, Nathan\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>His office assistant.<\/p>\n<p>She had finished scanning the remaining pages of Samuel Cole\u2019s file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne more item,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA letter Evelyn wrote in 2003.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMama?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was it addressed to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe died in 2001.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe apparently wrote it without realizing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The assistant hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says she tried to give Linda the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c1999.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had no memory of that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The assistant read.<\/p>\n<p>I put the cash in an envelope and drove to Linda\u2019s house. Wayne followed me.<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe followed her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked around Mama\u2019s kitchen as if Wayne might still be standing in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The assistant continued.<\/p>\n<p>He told Evelyn that if she gave me the money, he would tell Frank the accident had been a suicide attempt and show him my signed hospital statement.<\/p>\n<p>My anger returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe still had a copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mama\u2019s letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>Frank was already struggling.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that year.<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s brother had died.<\/p>\n<p>His business was unstable.<\/p>\n<p>He was drinking too much, though he later stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Mama decided not to risk it.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>She turned the car around.<\/p>\n<p>Brought the money home.<\/p>\n<p>Put it back.<\/p>\n<p>But the final line was different.<\/p>\n<p>I have spent my life thinking Linda was the strongest, and then using her strength as an excuse to ask her to carry what the rest of us could not.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern named.<\/p>\n<p>Not by me.<\/p>\n<p>By Mama.<\/p>\n<p>The assistant continued.<\/p>\n<p>There is one person I have not told her about because this secret is not mine alone.<\/p>\n<p>I opened my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat person?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan asked.<\/p>\n<p>The assistant read the next sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Frank.<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Frank?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>Before he died, Frank learned part of the truth.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2014.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank died nine years ago.<\/p>\n<p>That was 2017.<\/p>\n<p>He knew for three years.<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The assistant read.<\/p>\n<p>He knew Calvin was Linda\u2019s biological father.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Frank knew.<\/p>\n<p>My husband knew.<\/p>\n<p>And never told me.<\/p>\n<p>The old ache became suddenly new again.<\/p>\n<p>Then the assistant read the final line.<\/p>\n<p>Frank also knew where Calvin\u2019s last letter to Linda was hidden.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=21838\">Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Frank Had Known About Calvin Before He Died, and the Last Letter He Hid Forced Me to Question the Marriage I Trusted Most<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>St. Luke\u2019s had not been a church in years.
