white.

Hillcrest Motor Lodge.

Night.

Smoke.

Flames pouring from Room 23.

In the foreground stood Wayne.

Holding a gasoline can.

My breath stopped.

Russell whispered, “That’s him.”

On the back, Mama had written:

Michael took this.

Below it:

Original negative in red box.

I opened the red box.

A strip of photographic negative lay inside.

Along with another envelope.

My name.

Of course.

I opened it.

Linda,

If you reached this wall, then you know enough to understand why Wayne spent his life controlling everyone who knew him.

But you still do not know why I married him.

I stopped.

Russell looked at me.

The next line tightened my chest.

I did not marry Wayne because I loved him.

I married him because by then he knew what Michael had seen, who Russell’s father was, who your father was, and what Robert had sold him.

I thought marriage would make him stop threatening us.

It only gave him a key to the house.

My hands shook.

Then came the final paragraph.

There is one truth I have not hidden in any bank box, motel wall, storage unit, or river cache.

Only one person besides me can tell you.

Michael.

Before you judge what he did in 1987, ask him why Calvin had to leave town overnight.

I stared at the page.

“What happened in 1987?”

Russell asked.

I looked at the photograph of Wayne holding the gasoline can.

Then at Nathan.

“Call Michael.”

Nathan did.

Michael answered on the second ring.

I did not ease into it.

“What happened in 1987?”

Silence.

“Michael.”

His voice came quietly.

“You found Evelyn’s letter.”

“Yes.”

Another pause.

Then he said, “Calvin and I didn’t leave because Robert was going to expose the fire.”

My grip tightened.

“Then why?”

“Because Wayne found Calvin first.”

“What happened?”

Michael took a long breath.

“Calvin shot him.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Michael Finally Explained Why
