nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFacilitated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell whispered, \u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI created the custodial structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou built the account Wayne stole from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you knew he could reach it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you expect him to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is hard to believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me he only wanted control until you turned eighteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he need control at all?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you were irresponsible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was seventeen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mama agree?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another cut.<\/p>\n<p>Smaller this time only because there had been so many.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan said, \u201cDid you receive money from the settlement beyond your disclosed fee?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Wayne?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot through me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Tom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where did the missing funds go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Russell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome went to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForty-five hundred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome went to Wayne\u2019s debts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApproximately nine thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the rest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>I saw fear.<\/p>\n<p>Real fear.<\/p>\n<p>After all these years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere it is,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thing you still don\u2019t want to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did the rest go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know the final amount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel, answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The old man\u2019s eyes moved from me to Russell.<\/p>\n<p>Then back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the settlement money went to Robert Carter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was still in contact with Evelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Wayne give money to the man Mama divorced?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mama again.<\/p>\n<p>My fingers loosened around the pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Russell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Robert had learned Tom was Russell\u2019s biological father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell seemed to stop breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe threatened to tell Russell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The absurdity of it almost made me laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMama paid Robert five thousand dollars of my settlement to stop him from telling Russell the truth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert was angry.
