Your attorney called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan said, \u201cI paid the delinquent balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTemporary necessity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll reimburse you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can discuss it later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell glanced at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor once somebody handled something correctly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gave him a look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBad choice of words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Almost.<\/p>\n<p>Then I found the birth certificate.<\/p>\n<p>It had been folded inside a sealed envelope marked 1959.<\/p>\n<p>The year struck me before I read anything else.<\/p>\n<p>I was born in 1962.<\/p>\n<p>Russell in 1960.<\/p>\n<p>The boy from the photograph would have been about nineteen in 1978, not sixteen.<\/p>\n<p>I unfolded the certificate.<\/p>\n<p>Name:<\/p>\n<p>Michael James Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Mother:<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy Evelyn Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Father:<\/p>\n<p>Blank.<\/p>\n<p>My knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>Russell read over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mama\u2019s maiden name had been Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Before Wayne.<\/p>\n<p>Before my father.<\/p>\n<p>Before all of it.<\/p>\n<p>Michael James Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Born November 19, 1959.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s before me,\u201d Russell whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven months before him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that possible?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did the math silently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMama never had another baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, she did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Grandma would\u2019ve said something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma lied about everything embarrassing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked at the photographs again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the motel picture.<\/p>\n<p>If Michael had been born in 1959, he would have been eighteen in that photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly right.<\/p>\n<p>Mama had a son before Russell.<\/p>\n<p>A son neither of us had ever known existed.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan said quietly, \u201cLinda, what surname is on Russell\u2019s birth certificate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell answered before I could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd your father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert Carter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Michael was born before Evelyn married Robert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan said, \u201cThen Michael may have been placed for adoption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We found confirmation in the next envelope.<\/p>\n<p>A private adoption agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Mama\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>The adoptive parents:<\/p>\n<p>Harold and Evelyn Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Daniel\u2019s mother\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Russell sat down hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel was his brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdoptive brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I read the rest.<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s adoptive surname became Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Which meant the unknown teenager in the photograph was Michael Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Mama\u2019s first child.<\/p>\n<p>Our half brother.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Mercer\u2019s adopted younger brother.<\/p>\n<p>I felt suddenly cold despite the humid storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Daniel knew Mama before my case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Nathan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis mother adopted Mama\u2019s baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd in 1978, Mama briefly owned Wayne\u2019s motel, then transferred it to Daniel\u2019s mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what we still don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell picked up the photo of Michael beside Evelyn Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMama was seeing him again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese pictures. She must\u2019ve known who he was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I found a letter tucked behind them.<\/p>\n<p>No envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Mama\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Michael,<\/p>\n<p>I have no right to ask anything from you. I surrendered that right when I signed the papers. But please do not meet Wayne alone again.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the page was missing.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWayne was meeting Michael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell whispered, \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the black case.<\/p>\n<p>Mama had told me not to assume Daniel was my enemy.<\/p>\n<p>She had also warned me not to assume he was innocent.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the motel was not about money.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it was about Michael.<\/p>\n<p>I searched the remaining correspondence until I found one more letter.<\/p>\n<p>This one was from Daniel to Mama.<\/p>\n<p>September 12, 1978.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn,<\/p>\n<p>My mother will accept the transfer, but only because Michael insists. Wayne is making promises he cannot keep and threats he should never have made. If Tom Weaver is involved, you need to take the children and leave.<\/p>\n<p>The children.<\/p>\n<p>Russell and me.<\/p>\n<p>My hands began shaking.<\/p>\n<p>The letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>You asked whether I can protect Michael. I cannot promise that.
