Wayne said he could make the problem disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know how it sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sounds exactly like what you believed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell\u2019s face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was nineteen and terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mama know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she know before Wayne took my money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another blow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Wayne threaten you with?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo tell Cheryl\u2019s father that I had taken money from his garage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix hundred dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My brother had stolen from Cheryl\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne found out.<\/p>\n<p>Then Wayne offered to protect him, using my account to pay expenses connected to the adoption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy forty-five hundred?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWayne said that was what it cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed at the familiar phrase.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan spoke from the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda, your mother later believed Wayne kept most of that withdrawal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked up sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used you too,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Russell stared at the ground.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I saw that possibility reach him.<\/p>\n<p>We reached the storage facility at seven twelve.<\/p>\n<p>A storm was building over Memphis.<\/p>\n<p>The manager, a broad man named Eddie Collins, was waiting beside Unit 214.<\/p>\n<p>Mama had apparently called him months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>He recognized the key before Russell finished explaining.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother told me two people might come,\u201d Eddie said. \u201cBrother and sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe hoped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell handed him the key.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie unlocked the outer latch.<\/p>\n<p>The metal door rattled upward.<\/p>\n<p>Dusty air rolled out.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes filled almost the entire unit.<\/p>\n<p>At the back stood a black metal cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>On top of it was a wooden box with my name burned into the lid.<\/p>\n<p>LINDA.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped inside.<\/p>\n<p>Then Russell grabbed my arm.<\/p>\n<p>I jerked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t touch me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward the side wall.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph had been taped there.<\/p>\n<p>Mama.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne.<\/p>\n<p>Russell.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>And another man.<\/p>\n<p>I moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>The picture had been taken outside a lawyer\u2019s office after my settlement.<\/p>\n<p>The unknown man had one hand on Wayne\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Russell whispered, \u201cDaniel Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe attorney who handled your case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I studied the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Something was written beneath Daniel\u2019s name in Mama\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>HE KNEW BEFORE I DID.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed another line.<\/p>\n<p>Ask him what Wayne gave him.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=21826\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Inside Wayne\u2019s Storage Unit, Mama\u2019s Voice Named the People Who Helped Bury the Truth and Left One Last Warning for Me<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did not remember leaving the bank.
