I looked at Dana.<\/p>\n
"I don't know. There are baby medicines in the bag sometimes. Acetaminophen. Gas drops. That kind of thing."<\/p>\n
Dana typed something.<\/p>\n
"What happened after the parents left?"<\/p>\n

Rocking.<\/p>\n
Escalating cry.<\/p>\n

"When you uncovered the bruise," Dana said, "did you contact either parent before transporting her?"<\/p>\n

"Why not?"<\/p>\n
"Because she needed a doctor."<\/p>\n
Dana stopped typing.<\/p>\n
Not dramatically.<\/p>\n

"What time did you leave your house?"<\/p>\n
"I didn't check."<\/p>\n

"You arrived at ten fifty-six."<\/p>\n
"Then that sounds right."<\/p>\n
She nodded.<\/p>\n
The timeline was beginning to exist outside me now\u2014in a hospital computer, on Dana's tablet, in whatever report would follow Paige for months or years.<\/p>\n
I hated that.<\/p>\n
I also understood why it mattered.<\/p>\n
Another woman entered and quietly handed Dana several printed pages.<\/p>\n
Dana read the top sheet.<\/p>\n
Her mouth tightened.<\/p>\n
"What?" I asked.<\/p>\n

"It sounds exactly like you're accusing me."<\/p>\n
Dana stood.<\/p>\n
"Everyone needs to stop."<\/p>\n
The authority in her voice cut through us.<\/p>\n
"We will speak with each caregiver separately. Nobody benefits from arguing over an injury mechanism before the interviews are complete."<\/p>\n
Kate crossed her arms.<\/p>\n
"I want to stay with my baby."<\/p>\n
"You may remain until we're ready to speak with you."<\/p>\n
Ryan gestured toward Paige.<\/p>\n
"Can somebody at least tell us whether she'll need surgery?"<\/p>\n
Dr. Aris explained that orthopedics was evaluating the fracture and would determine the least invasive way to stabilize it. I barely heard the details.<\/p>\n
I was watching Kate.<\/p>\n
She would not look at me.<\/p>\n
