workbench.

Grandpa’s note had been hidden inside the envelope.

If Dale had not known about the note, perhaps he had simply taken all obvious papers.

If he had known—

I stopped.

Dust.

There was dust everywhere.

Across the bench.

Along the drawer fronts.

Inside the narrow gaps between wood panels.

One line was different.

Grandpa’s workbench had two bottom drawers.

Most people noticed only the wide one.

The second was narrow enough to look like part of the frame, especially because its handle had broken years ago.

I remembered opening it for Grandpa with a screwdriver.

My eyes moved to the wall.

The bent it.

Then I lifted the book.

An old yellow rubber band crumbled against my fingers.

I opened the cover.

Grandpa’s handwriting filled the first page.

At the top was my name.

Nancy Lee Harper.

Below it were seventeen numbers.

I pulled out my phone.

Compared them with the photographs of the bonds.

Every number matched.

Beside each, Grandpa had recorded a purchase date and amount.

I stared until the figures blurred.

At the bottom of the page, in smaller handwriting, was a sentence.

I read it once.

Then again.

The meaning was simple.

Grandpa wanted me to have something of my own—something no one else could use to control me.

My hand covered my mouth.

The woman in the red cardigan looked away, giving me privacy without leaving.

I sat in the five-dollar fishing chair.

For years I had assumed Grandpa saw me the way the rest of the family did.

Struggling.

Always one repair away from trouble.

Always needing help.

Maybe he had seen something else.

Maybe he had seen how often help arrived with instructions.

I turned the page.

There were ordinary entries.

Money for tires.

A birthday check.

The year my water heater failed.

I remembered each one.

I remembered the shame attached to them, too.

Alan asking whether I had an emergency fund.

Dale joking that I could make a dollar scream.

Grandpa never did that.

He simply helped.

Another page.

The entries changed.

March 8.

Grandpa had asked Dale to bring my envelope when I visited on Sunday.

March 10.

Dale claimed he couldn’t find it.

I leaned closer.

April 2.

Grandpa had found the envelope behind the furnace panel.

I stopped breathing.

Behind the furnace.

The same place I had found it.

But the next part of his note mattered more.

He had put it back there temporarily because he wanted to speak with me alone.

My skin prickled.

Grandpa had found the envelope hidden.

He had not chosen that hiding place.

Someone else had.

I turned the page.

The next entry had been written with enough pressure to dent the paper.

April 16.

Dale had told Grandpa that I did not want anything from him.

“No.”

The word escaped me.

The woman glanced over.

“I never said that.”

She didn’t respond.

She didn’t need to.

April 20.

Grandpa had asked Alan to tell me to call.

Alan said I needed space.

I closed my eyes.

That April.

Luke had broken his wrist.

The hospital bill had arrived the same week my car needed brakes.

I had worked extra shifts.

I called Grandpa’s house repeatedly.

Dale told me he was sleeping.

I asked Alan whether I should go over anyway.

Give him space, Nancy.

I could hear my brother saying it.

I opened my eyes.

The basement seemed to tilt.

They hadn’t merely kept money from me.

They had kept us from each other.

I turned another page.

Something slid out and landed on my shoe.

An envelope.

My name again.

This one had a stamp.

A postal label crossed the front.

RETURN TO SENDER.

Underneath, someone had written that I did not live at the address.

I stared.

It was my address.

The rental where I had lived for fourteen years.

I knew the handwriting.

Alan’s.

My brother had collected my mail during the weeks I worked late shifts and drove Luke to appointments.

I held the envelope so tightly the paper bent.

Then I forced my fingers to loosen.

A door slammed upstairs.

Footsteps crossed the kitchen.

“Nancy?”

Dale.

The woman beside me straightened.

I closed the ledger with the returned envelope inside.

Dale’s footsteps reached the basement stairs.

He appeared at the top.

Pam was behind him.

His eyes went immediately to the blue book.

The color drained from his face.

“There it is.”

He descended quickly.

“We’ve been
