to the furnace.

The boxes around it were ordinary: Christmas decorations, canning jars, a cracked humidifier, an ancient vacuum cleaner.

I pulled the first box aside.

Dust had collected behind it in a thick gray ridge.

The wall panel behind the furnace looked slightly crooked.

I knew that panel.

Grandpa had removed it years ago to reach a shutoff valve.

One screw never seated correctly afterward.

I touched it.

The panel shifted.

My heart began beating harder.

I told myself I was being in an emergency room while a doctor reset his broken wrist.

I had worked doubles with a fever because rent was due.

Yet I was sitting on my grandfather’s basement floor afraid of being caught holding an envelope with my own name on it.

That realization made something inside me go still.

I took the envelope out.

The flap had already been opened.

Not torn.

Opened.

Someone had been inside it.

I slid my finger beneath the flap.

There were papers within, wrapped in the cracked leather cover of an old pocket Bible.

I recognized it.

Grandpa used to keep that Bible in his truck.

The leather was warped from moisture.

I opened the cover.

Inside were seventeen rectangular documents.

Savings bonds.

I knew almost nothing about them, but I knew enough to recognize the words United States.

Grandpa’s name appeared on each.

So did mine.

I read the first one twice.

Henry Harper.

Nancy Lee Harper.

The date was 1984.

I was a child.

Another bond had been purchased three years later.

Another after that.

The dates stretched across decades.

I counted.

Seventeen.

My breathing became shallow.

Tucked behind the bonds was a yellow sticky note.

Not Grandpa’s handwriting.

Pam’s.

I read it.

Then I read it again.

Her message was brief, but the meaning was unmistakable.

It questioned whether my name on the bonds had to be treated as belonging to me or whether the estate could proceed without recognizing it.

I sat there with the note in my hand.

Upstairs, somebody laughed.

The sound came through the ceiling as if from another house.

I looked at the bonds.

Grandpa had put my name on them.

Someone had hidden them behind the furnace.

Pam had been asking where the envelope was.

Dale had warned me not to assume an envelope belonged to the person whose name appeared on it.

For the first time, those facts lined up.

I photographed every bond.

Front.

Back.

The envelope.

The sticky note.

My hands stopped shaking once I had copies.

Then I returned everything to the Bible cover and slipped it inside my purse.

I did not know whether I was legally entitled to the bonds.

I did not know what they were worth.

I did not know why Grandpa had bought them.

But I knew one thing with complete certainty.

I was not handing them to Dale before I understood what they were.

I replaced the furnace panel.

The screw turned loosely beneath my fingers.

When I stood, the room seemed unnaturally bright.

I continued cleaning.

That was the strange part.

I filled another garbage bag.

I sorted fishing tackle.

I wiped dust from Mason jars.

Every few minutes, my eyes moved toward my purse.

At one-thirty, Dale came downstairs.

This time he came all the way.

“Pam says you haven’t eaten.”

“I’m
