Then I asked Patricia for the invoice total.”

I looked at Mom.

She nodded.

The amount was almost exact.

Dara lowered herself into the chair again.

“I can’t undo the filing.”

“No.”

“I can’t undo the reunion either.”

“No.”

Her eyes met mine.

“I told everybody you had abandoned the family because that was easier than admitting I was angry you made a decision without me.”

The room stayed silent.

“I convinced myself I was protecting something Grandpa wanted us to recover. Then every time somebody questioned me, I treated the question as proof they didn’t care enough.”

Dad looked down.

Dara continued.

“Martin didn’t create that part of me. He just knew how to use it.”

I sat across from her.

The same table had hosted thirty years of family dinners.

At that table Dara had criticized my jobs, relationships, move, finances, and eventually my cabin.

At that table, nobody had ever stopped her soon enough.

Until now.

“I spent years thinking that taking care of this family meant managing it,” she said. “I thought if I organized everything, remembered everything, fixed everything, then I got to decide things too.”

Her fingers tightened around the coffee cup.

“I didn’t understand that helping people and controlling them aren’t the same.”

Mom wiped her eyes.

I did not.

Not yet.

An apology could matter without instantly repairing what caused it.

“I’m not ready to pretend this is fine,” I said.

Dara nodded.

“I know.”

“I don’t know when I’ll trust you again.”

“I know.”

“And I’m not giving you the cabin.”

A weak laugh escaped Alicia.

Even Dara smiled at that.

“I know.”

Then Dad spoke.

“She shouldn’t have had to fight you alone.”

Everyone turned.

He was looking at me.

“I should have stopped this years ago.”

My throat tightened.

Dad rubbed one hand over his jaw.

“Not the property thing. All of it. Every time Dara decided something for everyone and we let her because arguing was harder.”

Dara stared at him.

He looked at her too.

“That wasn’t fair to you either. We let you think being the oldest meant being responsible for everybody.”

Nobody seemed prepared for that.

Least of all Dara.

The room grew quiet.

Outside, wind rattled the bare branches against the kitchen window.

I looked at the cashier’s check.

Then at my sister.

For the first time since this began, there was no property between us.

No map.

No deed.

No inheritance.

Only choices.

Past ones.

And whatever came next.

Before I could speak, Alicia’s phone buzzed.

She checked the screen.

Her expression changed.

“What?” I asked.

She turned the phone toward us.

It was a message from Laura Pierce, the historical researcher.

She had completed the archival comparison.

Elias Whitmore’s land had been identified.

The eighty-acre farm was real.

The family story had been real too.

But the property had never been anywhere near my cabin.

And Laura had found records explaining exactly how our ancestors lost it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Records Revealed Why Our Ancestors Lost Their Farm, and the Truth Was Nothing Like the Story Dara Had Inherited

The courthouse opened at eight-thirty Monday morning.
