Only after sitting several feet away did she quietly introduce herself and explain that her job was to make sure children were safe.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee did not respond. She held Mia\u2019s stuffed llama against her chest so tightly that one of its ears folded under her fingers. Her pink sneakers remained on both feet. The left heel had darkened since we left my house, and I had stopped pretending the stain might somehow become less serious if nobody mentioned it.<\/p>\n<p>Dana looked at me first. \u201cI\u2019m going to speak with Kaylee privately in a little while. Before that, I need to understand what happened from the beginning. Only what you personally observed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I described the previous evening carefully. I told her about Greg\u2019s truck, Tasha\u2019s partially lowered window, the shoes, the limp, the bleeding, the messages, and the note in the backpack. I knew he traveled. Everyone did. What I had never considered was how neatly those absences could divide Kaylee\u2019s life into two separate versions.<\/p>\n<p>Dana asked, \u201cDoes your dad know your feet are hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he see them yesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas he home yesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer startled me.<\/p>\n<p>Dana leaned forward slightly. \u201cThen why didn\u2019t he see?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee whispered, \u201cTasha said I had to keep my socks on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the shoes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor how long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee looked confused by the question, as though the answer depended on rules she had learned not to examine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil they\u2019re normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana let a few seconds pass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to your feet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was automatic again.<\/p>\n<p>Dana nodded as though she accepted the answer completely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you fall?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee stared at her lap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More silence.<\/p>\n<p>Dana changed direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know why Mrs. Harper is worried?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I got blood on her carpet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said before I could stop myself.<\/p>\n<p>Dana lifted one hand gently, not reprimanding me but reminding me to let her lead.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee glanced at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry about the carpet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe carpet does not matter,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words slipped out so quietly that for a second I thought I had misheard them.<\/p>\n<p>Dana asked, \u201cWhat happens at home when something gets stained?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee\u2019s body stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens when clothes get dirty?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens when the floor gets dirty?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every answer came faster than the last.<\/p>\n<p>Dana stopped.<\/p>\n<p>She reached into her bag and pulled out a small sealed package of crackers and a juice box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you eaten breakfast?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you like these?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes went to the crackers.<\/p>\n<p>Then to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She opened the package carefully and ate one cracker in tiny bites.<\/p>\n<p>Dana watched without appearing to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you get breakfast at home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you eat yesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee stopped chewing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana nodded again.<\/p>\n<p>She let Kaylee finish three crackers before asking another question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho decides when you can eat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlways?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTasha when he\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when he\u2019s home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes Tasha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer seemed ordinary enough until Dana asked, \u201cWhat happens if you\u2019re hungry before she says you can eat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee lowered her gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor how long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHours?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A shrug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil the next meal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another shrug.<\/p>\n<p>Dana stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that\u2019s enough for now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee looked startled. \u201cI\u2019m done?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The relief on her face was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Benton knelt beside her again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I look at your heel now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Dana said, \u201cYou can say no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The child looked from one adult to another.<\/p>\n<p>Then she nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Removing the left sneaker took nearly five minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The sock had adhered to the skin near the heel. Ms. Benton soaked it slowly with warm saline until the fabric loosened. Kaylee bit her sleeve throughout the process but did not cry.<\/p>\n<p>When the sock finally came away, Mia\u2019s counselor turned toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>I understood why.<\/p>\n<p>The injury was not one blister.<\/p>\n<p>There were several raw areas around the back and sides of the heel, some fresh and others already healing. Thin parallel marks crossed the skin above the ankle. Two deeper abrasions curved inward from opposite sides.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Benton did not identify a cause.<\/p>\n<p>Neither did Dana.<\/p>\n<p>But nobody in that room believed the explanation about falling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther foot?\u201d the nurse asked.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee shook her head violently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt might be hurt too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaylee\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>Dana intervened immediately. \u201cWe stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Benton backed away.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee scrambled to pull the bloody sock on again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, sweetheart,\u201d the nurse said gently. \u201cLet me give you a clean one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need that one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTasha counts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every adult in the room froze.<\/p>\n<p>Dana spoke first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCounts what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee realized what she had said.<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth closed.<\/p>\n<p>Dana waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Tasha count?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe socks?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour clothes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe things in your backpack?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes flicked toward Dana.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Dana turned to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mentioned Kaylee said Tasha would know if something moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana looked toward Mrs. Fox. \u201cCan we get a paper bag? Not plastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The counselor left and returned with one from the nurse\u2019s supply closet.<\/p>\n<p>Dana asked Kaylee for permission to place the bloody sock inside.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee refused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens if it doesn\u2019t go home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould Tasha notice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A whisper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe checks everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnows what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee\u2019s face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana did not move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow does a sock tell her whether you talked to someone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee looked toward me as if asking whether silence was still allowed.<\/p>\n<p>Dana answered the question in her expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to tell me today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee breathed again.<\/p>\n<p>The nurse cleaned and dressed the visible wounds.
