Can I look?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nurse didn\u2019t move closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you tell me where it hurts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I handed her Tasha\u2019s note.<\/p>\n<p>She read it.<\/p>\n<p>Then read it again.<\/p>\n<p>Her face became very still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho gave you this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was in Kaylee\u2019s backpack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox looked at the girl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know it was there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The counselor asked, \u201cWere you told to give it to Mrs. Harper?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another nod.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you told why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee pressed the llama against her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 7:22, Ms. Benton managed to examine enough of Kaylee\u2019s heel to see blood around the sock and several injuries that did not resemble an ordinary blister.<\/p>\n<p>She stood.<\/p>\n<p>She did not say anything in front of Kaylee.<\/p>\n<p>She simply looked at Mrs. Fox.<\/p>\n<p>The counselor understood.<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox stepped into the adjoining office and made a call.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee watched the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is she calling?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone who knows how to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before I could answer, Mrs. Fox returned.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was gentle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaylee, someone is coming to speak with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee\u2019s fingers dug into the stuffed llama.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you call my dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTasha?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Fox sat opposite her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA woman named Dana Mercer.
