At the time, however, I was still standing in my own living room with two eight-year-old girls ten yards away, trying to distinguish between genuine danger and the kind of misunderstanding that could destroy trust between families.<\/p>\n<p>I took a photograph of the blood on the rug.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know why.<\/p>\n<p>Instinct, perhaps.<\/p>\n<p>Then I photographed the message from Tasha on my screen even though I knew the text itself would remain there.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s fine.<\/p>\n<p>I put the phone down when I heard the bathroom door open.<\/p>\n<p>Mia came out first.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee followed.<\/p>\n<p>Her face looked freshly washed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything okay?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She had rehearsed the answer.<\/p>\n<p>I could hear it now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome sit with me for a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to touch your shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She glanced at Mia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMia can stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My daughter sat on the couch. Kaylee lowered herself beside her carefully.<\/p>\n<p>I chose the floor so I wouldn\u2019t tower over them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaylee, I need you to tell me whether your foot is bleeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t something you can get in trouble for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just a blister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlisters can bleed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTasha said it\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Tasha isn\u2019t here, and right now you\u2019re with me. If you\u2019re injured, I\u2019m responsible for making sure you\u2019re safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee\u2019s eyes darted toward the front door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you\u2019re responsible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo call Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was something almost desperate in her reasoning, as though she knew a rule I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want me to call him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing came out.<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Mia leaned against the couch arm.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Kaylee whispered, \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the first honest answer she had given me about her feet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you feel safer if I didn\u2019t call him yet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her gaze rose to mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I expected relief.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, she whispered, \u201cYou can\u2019t tell Tasha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept my expression neutral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I said that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Tasha hurt you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Too fast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid your dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time there was confusion rather than panic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid somebody else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see the nurse?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid your teacher see?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you fall on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The story had collapsed almost as soon as she built it.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t expose the lie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to tell me everything right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I do need to know whether you need a doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another instant answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing quickened.<\/p>\n<p>I backed away from the question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would make you comfortable enough to let me check the blood?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if you did it yourself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could go into the bathroom alone. You don\u2019t have to remove the shoe completely. Just see whether the bandage has come loose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved toward Mia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan she come?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mia immediately stood.<\/p>\n<p>Before they left, I said, \u201cIf it\u2019s bleeding badly, tell me. No one will be angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee gave me a look I didn\u2019t understand yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girls went into the bathroom.<\/p>\n<p>I heard whispers.<\/p>\n<p>Then silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mia said, \u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just that.<\/p>\n<p>Oh.<\/p>\n<p>I stood but forced myself not to approach.<\/p>\n<p>A minute later, Mia opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>Her face was pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee appeared behind her.<\/p>\n<p>One sneaker was still on.<\/p>\n<p>The other had been loosened but not removed.<\/p>\n<p>The heel of her white sock was dark red.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaylee, that needs to be cleaned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoney\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She tried to push the shoe back onto her foot.<\/p>\n<p>Pain crossed her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease don\u2019t put pressure on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her hands started shaking.<\/p>\n<p>Mia touched her arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee looked at my daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, it isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens if the shoe comes off?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>There.<\/p>\n<p>That was the question.<\/p>\n<p>Not what happened to her foot.<\/p>\n<p>What happened if the evidence was seen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you scared?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her lower lip trembled.<\/p>\n<p>I softened my voice. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to tell me who you\u2019re afraid of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes snapped to mine.<\/p>\n<p>That told me more than an answer would have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t even have to tell me what happened tonight. But I\u2019m not going to send you somewhere you\u2019re frightened to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Quietly.<\/p>\n<p>No wailing. No tantrum. Tears simply spilled down her cheeks while she kept trying to push her foot back into the sneaker.<\/p>\n<p>I reached toward her, then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay I help?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mia sat beside her on the bathroom floor.<\/p>\n<p>I brought a clean towel, antiseptic, gauze, and water. I placed everything within reach and backed away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can clean it yourself if you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee stared at the supplies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t take the sock off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll stick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The clinical simplicity of that answer frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She realized her mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas this happened before?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>I sat against the opposite wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaylee, I\u2019m going to tell you something. You are not responsible for keeping an adult out of trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn\u2019t named anyone.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the sentence hit her like an accusation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pulled her knees against her chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t tell anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mia looked at me, frightened.<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold despite the warm bathroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you not to tell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee pressed both hands over her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped asking.<\/p>\n<p>The next twenty minutes were painfully slow. Eventually, with Mia beside her, Kaylee let the shoe slide halfway off. She refused to remove it completely. She would not allow me to touch the sock.<\/p>\n<p>But I saw enough.<\/p>\n<p>Blood had soaked through near the heel.<\/p>\n<p>Not a single neat blister.<\/p>\n<p>A broader area.<\/p>\n<p>And above the sock line, near the side of her ankle, I saw what looked like several small healing marks.<\/p>\n<p>Too evenly spaced.<\/p>\n<p>I took no photograph then.<\/p>\n<p>Not while she was watching.<\/p>\n<p>I simply said, \u201cYou\u2019re staying here tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad is coming tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll deal with tomorrow when it comes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTasha said\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Tasha say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee stared down at her pink sneaker.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cShe\u2019ll check.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat will she check?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour foot?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour shoes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaylee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe checks if I told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words were barely audible.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the entire evening rearrange itself around that sentence.<\/p>\n<p>The backpack.<\/p>\n<p>The shoes.<\/p>\n<p>The refusal to eat.<\/p>\n<p>The panic when I mentioned calling her father.<\/p>\n<p>The blood.<\/p>\n<p>The constant glances toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>This was not a child embarrassed by a blister.<\/p>\n<p>This was a child following instructions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens if she thinks you told?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee\u2019s eyes moved toward Mia.<\/p>\n<p>Then back to me.<\/p>\n<p>She whispered, \u201cPlease don\u2019t make me go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And at that moment, whatever uncertainty remained in me disappeared.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=21377\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: A Note Hidden in Kaylee\u2019s Backpack Changed My Question From Whether She Was Hurt to Who Was Controlling Her<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did not call Greg immediately.
