Two accounts were drained overnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy Julian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t prove that yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus sent a spreadsheet.<\/p>\n<p>One company, Vance Strategic Logistics, had received nearly a million dollars over eighteen months. Another had moved money through three jurisdictions before returning part of it to Sterling Meridian. R.S. doesn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCopies of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat,\u201d Eleanor said, \u201cis probably the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 2:03, my phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph loaded.<\/p>\n<p>It showed a row of old metal storage lockers.<\/p>\n<p>Number 317 had a strip of red tape across the top.<\/p>\n<p>Then another message:<\/p>\n<p>Your father paid for ten years.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the place.<\/p>\n<p>Grand Central Storage.<\/p>\n<p>A private document-storage company my father had used when he was alive.<\/p>\n<p>It was less than thirty minutes from our house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know where this is,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor shook her head immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo spontaneous trips.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can verify first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus did.<\/p>\n<p>The company still existed.<\/p>\n<p>Locker 317 was registered to a trust connected to my father\u2019s estate.<\/p>\n<p>The annual fees had been prepaid.<\/p>\n<p>And according to the clerk, the locker had not been accessed in nine years.<\/p>\n<p>Not since my father died.<\/p>\n<p>The encrypted sender knew about a storage locker that I did not know I owned.<\/p>\n<p>That eliminated almost everyone from the list of possible senders.<\/p>\n<p>Almost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Richard know?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor answered carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Liam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly if his father knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Julian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Every road seemed to connect to people I could not trust.<\/p>\n<p>We arranged a controlled visit.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor insisted on law enforcement notification, two security vehicles, and documentation of everything from the moment we entered the storage facility.<\/p>\n<p>At 3:11, I stood before locker 317.<\/p>\n<p>It was larger than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Waist-high.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy steel.<\/p>\n<p>The manager inserted the facility key.<\/p>\n<p>I used the brass duplicate from my father\u2019s estate key ring.<\/p>\n<p>It turned.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were three banker\u2019s boxes.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>No stacks of cash.<\/p>\n<p>No weapons.<\/p>\n<p>No mysterious hard drives glowing beneath fluorescent lights.<\/p>\n<p>Just paper.<\/p>\n<p>My father would have approved.<\/p>\n<p>The first box contained old partnership records.<\/p>\n<p>The second held correspondence.<\/p>\n<p>The third was sealed with brown tape.<\/p>\n<p>Across the top, in my father\u2019s handwriting, were the words:<\/p>\n<p>IF RICHARD DISAPPEARS, OPEN EVERYTHING.<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor photographed the box before cutting the tape.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were copies of bank statements, corporate diagrams, meeting notes, and handwritten summaries.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom lay a thin red ledger.<\/p>\n<p>The first page carried Graham Vance\u2019s initials.<\/p>\n<p>G.V.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room tilt slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiam\u2019s father made this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor turned several pages.<\/p>\n<p>Transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Account numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Initials.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Beside many entries were two letters.<\/p>\n<p>R.S.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Sterling.<\/p>\n<p>Then later:<\/p>\n<p>J.S.<\/p>\n<p>Julian Sterling.<\/p>\n<p>The records overlapped.<\/p>\n<p>Father and son.<\/p>\n<p>Years apart.<\/p>\n<p>Same network.<\/p>\n<p>I kept turning pages until one name stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>Claire Whitmore.<\/p>\n<p>My maiden name.<\/p>\n<p>The entry was dated eleven years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Before I married Julian.<\/p>\n<p>The amount beside it was five million dollars.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never received this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is the account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus joined by video call.<\/p>\n<p>He examined the number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We waited.<\/p>\n<p>The storage room seemed unnaturally quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Marcus said, \u201cIt appears to have been a temporary holding account created under a trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhitmore Legacy Preservation Trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was my father\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo why is Richard\u2019s money moving through it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>Then we reached the final pages.<\/p>\n<p>Several had been removed.<\/p>\n<p>Not torn recently.<\/p>\n<p>Removed carefully years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Only the binding marks remained.<\/p>\n<p>But one loose sheet rested inside the back cover.<\/p>\n<p>It contained a handwritten sentence from my father.<\/p>\n<p>Graham says Richard intends to fake insolvency before investigators arrive. Julian knows enough to be dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>The note was dated eight years before Richard\u2019s supposed death.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever Richard had done had been developing for years.<\/p>\n<p>Then Eleanor noticed another line near the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>If anything happens to either of us, Claire must never sign for Sterling Meridian.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Sterling Meridian.<\/p>\n<p>The company Julian told me had been created recently.<\/p>\n<p>The company that had actually existed much longer.<\/p>\n<p>The company now carrying suspicious money beneath my name.<\/p>\n<p>My father had known about it before I married Julian.<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Before Julian claimed it existed.<\/p>\n<p>I felt suddenly sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew there was a danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe let me marry Julian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know what he knew about Julian then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wrote his name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he wrote that Julian knew enough to be dangerous. That isn\u2019t the same as saying Julian was already committing the crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It did not make me feel better.<\/p>\n<p>We packed everything into evidence containers.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, I checked the locker one last time.<\/p>\n<p>Something was wedged behind the rear panel.<\/p>\n<p>A small digital recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Old.<\/p>\n<p>Battery dead.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator bagged it.<\/p>\n<p>Back at the house, Marcus\u2019s team extracted the storage card.<\/p>\n<p>There were twelve audio files.<\/p>\n<p>Most were conversations between my father and Graham Vance.<\/p>\n<p>The last recording was different.<\/p>\n<p>My father spoke alone.<\/p>\n<p>His voice filled the office for the first time in nine years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire,\u201d he began, \u201cif you are hearing this, then something has gone very wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor looked away.<\/p>\n<p>My father continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not assume Richard is dead simply because someone tells you he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have reason to believe Richard Sterling has prepared more than one exit from the life he publicly lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chair creaked in the old recording.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he disappears, Julian may inherit more than a business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may inherit the machinery behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes burned.<\/p>\n<p>Then my father said the sentence that changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if Julian ever asks you to sign anything involving Sterling Meridian, do not do it. Not even if he tells you that I approved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording clicked off.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds I could not move.<\/p>\n<p>Julian had never asked me to sign.<\/p>\n<p>He had forged my signature instead.<\/p>\n<p>My father had predicted the danger.<\/p>\n<p>Julian had simply found a way around the warning.<\/p>\n<p>Then Marcus interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s another file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The final recording was only thirty-seven seconds long.<\/p>\n<p>A man I recognized as Graham Vance sounded breathless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry, Richard knows.
