Ben reached for the office door and closed it. The click of the latch sounded unnecessarily loud.<\/p>\n

Eight ordinary days during which Ben had apparently carried the biggest decision of our marriage in his pocket while asking whether we needed milk.<\/p>\n

He blinked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou had four months to learn the details. I\u2019ve had roughly twelve minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo scheduled operating days most weeks. One clinic day. Administrative work. Fewer weekends. Call rotation every sixth weekend instead of every third.\u201d<\/p>\n
I hated how attractive that sounded.<\/p>\n
Ben saw it in my face.<\/p>\n

He leaned both hands against the edge of his desk.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t keep living like this.\u201d<\/p>\n
The anger in me shifted.<\/p>\n
Ben rarely admitted weakness directly. Fatigue, yes. Frustration, occasionally. But the sentence he had just spoken sounded different.<\/p>\n
I waited.<\/p>\n
He stared at the floor.<\/p>\n
\u201cI missed Olive\u2019s birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou said you were too tired to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI was ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n
I swallowed the answer rising in my throat.<\/p>\n
Ben continued.<\/p>\n
\u201cI keep thinking I can endure another month, another staffing shortage, another resignation. Every time they promise they\u2019re hiring, something happens. Then somebody gets sick or leaves or transfers, and the rest of us stretch farther.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, Chels.\u201d<\/p>\n
Something raw entered his voice.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know what it looks like from home. You don\u2019t know what it feels like when I\u2019m standing in an operating room at three in the morning wondering whether I\u2019m tired enough to become dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n
That stopped me.<\/p>\n
He looked immediately regretful, as if he had revealed more than he intended.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow often have you felt that way?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNot often.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause what could you do?\u201d<\/p>\n
The sentence came quietly.<\/p>\n
It still hurt.<\/p>\n
I stared at him.<\/p>\n
Ben realized it immediately.<\/p>\n

The simple agreement disarmed me more than an argument would have.<\/p>\n
