Back corner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He found it.<\/p>\n<p>The metal lifted.<\/p>\n<p>Inside lay the dead phone.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus struggled against the officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not she is a human being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen rage in his face many times.<\/p>\n<p>This was different.<\/p>\n<p>Fear had hollowed it.<\/p>\n<p>He turned reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p>The handcuffs closed around his wrists.<\/p>\n<p>The sound was small.<\/p>\n<p>Metal against metal.<\/p>\n<p>Yet after three weeks of hearing locks used against me, that click sounded unlike any lock I had heard before.<\/p>\n<p>It was not closing around me.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He twisted toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMother, don\u2019t say anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat advice applies to you too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paramedic examined the cage door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need cutters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have the key,\u201d Evelyn said.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She removed the chain.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lock has been welded,\u201d Harris said.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn lowered the key.<\/p>\n<p>For three weeks, that small piece of brass had controlled my water, food, and access to the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>Now it was useless.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have opened it yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tears filled her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe day before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came down every rotten apples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept you alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence silenced the room.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn seemed to hear it only after she had spoken.<\/p>\n<p>Harris looked at her differently.<\/p>\n<p>So did the officers.<\/p>\n<p>She stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t mean\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept me alive,\u201d I repeated, \u201cbecause Marcus needed me alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved toward him.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus shouted from across the basement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShut up!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn\u2019t know what she\u2019s talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you have nothing to worry about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus laughed sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou people think this is about some marriage problem?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective watched him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus realized the trap.<\/p>\n<p>He closed his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>But Evelyn had begun to unravel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou promised she wouldn\u2019t be hurt this badly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said it was temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said once the papers were finished\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSHUT UP.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris moved toward Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat papers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked terrified.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus fought against the officer holding him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t answer him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat papers, ma\u2019am?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s gaze drifted toward the shelving at the far end of the basement.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly where Marcus had looked earlier.<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>Harris followed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s behind there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing,\u201d Marcus said immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody had asked him.<\/p>\n<p>The paramedics arrived with cutting equipment before Harris could pursue the question.<\/p>\n<p>They covered me with a heavy protective blanket.<\/p>\n<p>The cutter screamed against the metal.<\/p>\n<p>Sparks sprayed across the concrete.<\/p>\n<p>I shut my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The sound resembled Marcus\u2019s welder.<\/p>\n<p>For one terrible second I was back hours earlier, watching him seal the door.<\/p>\n<p>Then the sound changed.<\/p>\n<p>Metal bent.<\/p>\n<p>Hands pulled.<\/p>\n<p>The cage opened.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the gap.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody rushed me.<\/p>\n<p>The paramedic leaned inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to move you onto a stretcher.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>My legs would not support me.<\/p>\n<p>They wrapped me in blankets.<\/p>\n<p>When they lifted me, pain tore through my abdomen.<\/p>\n<p>I screamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContraction,\u201d the paramedic said. \u201cStay with me, Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped her sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re taking care of both of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They carried me toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>I looked back once.<\/p>\n<p>The cage stood open.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus was handcuffed.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn had removed the gold chain.<\/p>\n<p>The key lay on a table.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Harris stood near the shelving.<\/p>\n<p>Then Marcus\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone paused.<\/p>\n<p>An officer removed it from his pocket.<\/p>\n<p>The screen displayed one name.<\/p>\n<p>Victor.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus went pale.<\/p>\n<p>Harris noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho\u2019s Victor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus\u2019s father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The phone stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Then began ringing again.<\/p>\n<p>Harris looked at Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersistent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is your father calling you tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No response.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn spoke quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s head snapped toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnows what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn looked at the shelving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor\u2019s company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus struggled again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop talking!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris ordered the officer to take him upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus resisted.<\/p>\n<p>His voice echoed through the basement as they dragged him away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU\u2019RE DOING!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paramedics began carrying me up.<\/p>\n<p>I looked over their shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Harris remained beside Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is behind those shelves?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could not hear her answer.<\/p>\n<p>The basement ceiling moved above me as the stretcher climbed.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in three weeks, I reached the top of those stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh air touched my face.<\/p>\n<p>Guests stood in the hallway, pale and silent.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who had heard my scream covered her mouth when she saw me.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, red and blue emergency lights moved across the house.<\/p>\n<p>I searched the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lena broke through before an officer could stop her.<\/p>\n<p>Her face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached toward her.<\/p>\n<p>She caught my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found me first,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Then another contraction doubled me over.<\/p>\n<p>The paramedics rushed the stretcher toward the ambulance.<\/p>\n<p>Lena followed.<\/p>\n<p>Behind us, police were sealing the house.<\/p>\n<p>I looked back once.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Harris stood in the doorway speaking to another investigator.<\/p>\n<p>Two officers were heading toward the basement carrying evidence equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had believed the cage was where my story would end.<\/p>\n<p>He had been wrong about that.<\/p>\n<p>But as the ambulance doors closed, I understood something else.<\/p>\n<p>The fear in Marcus\u2019s face had changed the moment Harris asked about the shelves.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever was hidden beneath that house had been important enough for him to forge messages, isolate me from Lena, starve me, and prepare a story explaining my disappearance.<\/p>\n<p>The cage had not merely been built to punish me.<\/p>\n<p>It had been built beside something Marcus
