There are ten people upstairs who think I\u2019m somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him through the bars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word frightened me almost as much as it angered him.<\/p>\n<p>For months, Marcus had trained me to soften every refusal.<\/p>\n<p>Not now.<\/p>\n<p>He reached through the bars.<\/p>\n<p>I jerked backward.<\/p>\n<p>His fingers caught my ankle.<\/p>\n<p>Pain shot through my leg as he pulled.<\/p>\n<p>I kicked instinctively.<\/p>\n<p>My heel struck his wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus swore and released me.<\/p>\n<p>The movement uncovered the edge of the panel.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes dropped.<\/p>\n<p>I saw recognition.<\/p>\n<p>He reached toward it.<\/p>\n<p>I threw myself across the floor.<\/p>\n<p>My body covered the panel.<\/p>\n<p>Another contraction struck at almost the same moment.<\/p>\n<p>I cried out.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stopped.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds neither of us moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then he laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re really in labor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed both hands against my stomach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His amusement disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Not because he cared.<\/p>\n<p>Because labor complicated his plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren\u2019t supposed to start yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Babies do not respect schedules, but the sentence chilled me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was supposed to happen first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said I wasn\u2019t supposed to start yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShut up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were you waiting for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He grabbed one of the bars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove away from that panel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood then that whatever was beneath the basement\u2014whatever Marcus feared I might discover\u2014mattered almost as much to him as keeping me imprisoned.<\/p>\n<p>I had assumed his obsession with the basement was about me.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I had been wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re hiding something down here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face became completely still.<\/p>\n<p>That stillness confirmed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s behind those shelves?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His gaze flicked toward the far wall.<\/p>\n<p>Only for an instant.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.<\/p>\n<p>The shelves.<\/p>\n<p>Months earlier, before the cage, I had once moved toward them while searching for holiday decorations.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had struck me.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time he hit me hard enough to leave a visible mark.<\/p>\n<p>Later he apologized, bought flowers, blamed stress.<\/p>\n<p>I had believed the apology because believing it seemed easier than understanding the blow.<\/p>\n<p>Now I knew better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re afraid someone will search the basement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody is searching anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I die down here, police will come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The certainty in his voice made my skin prickle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think nobody will report me missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re an adult who left voluntarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLena won\u2019t believe that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLena believes what evidence tells her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat evidence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>I hated that smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMessages. Emails. Things you wrote before leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t write anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat won\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Forged messages.<\/p>\n<p>A false trail.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had prepared this.<\/p>\n<p>The cage was not a moment of rage.<\/p>\n<p>It was part of something planned.<\/p>\n<p>My fear changed shape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were going to make me disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the baby?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His silence answered.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent three weeks trying to survive one cruel man.<\/p>\n<p>Now I understood I was inside something larger.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus reached through the bars again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast chance. I\u2019M DOWN HERE!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lunged for me through the bars.<\/p>\n<p>I backed away.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs, the music grew louder.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus must have controlled it remotely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was quiet again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody can hear you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something uncertain moved through his expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hear every word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I needed him talking.<\/p>\n<p>The phone might still be recording.<\/p>\n<p>I had no way to check.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo tell me,\u201d I said. \u201cWhy keep me alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you wanted me gone, why three weeks?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause timing matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat timing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wouldn\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always thought you were smarter than me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I thought you were my husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, that seemed to land.<\/p>\n<p>Not emotionally.<\/p>\n<p>As an accusation he could not comfortably dismiss.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI defended you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoor you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lied to Lena for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe hated me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was afraid of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe should have minded her business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I stopped calling her because you asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made sure I understood the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth curved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least now you\u2019re being honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to spit at him.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I kept him talking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think you\u2019ve won.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know I have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou welded a pregnant woman into a cage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd who knows?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked upward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name struck me strangely.<\/p>\n<p>He used it so rarely now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going to disappear,\u201d he continued. \u201cPeople will feel sorry for me. They\u2019ll think you ran away because you were unstable. Your sister will blame herself. In a year, nobody will be asking questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you touched things that didn\u2019t belong to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He realized too late how much he had said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps sounded overhead.<\/p>\n<p>A voice called him.<\/p>\n<p>He straightened.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, he pointed at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I come back, I\u2019m cutting that panel open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he climbed the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>I waited until the door closed.<\/p>\n<p>The phone.<\/p>\n<p>I dragged myself to the panel.<\/p>\n<p>My fingers were clumsy.<\/p>\n<p>I lifted the edge.<\/p>\n<p>The screen remained dark.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed the button.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The battery had died.<\/p>\n<p>For a few seconds, despair was so complete that the basement seemed to tilt around me.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>The message had delivered.<\/p>\n<p>At least part of it.<\/p>\n<p>Lena knew.<\/p>\n<p>Or she might know.<\/p>\n<p>I did not know whether the location had finished sending.<\/p>\n<p>I did not know whether the last recording had saved.<\/p>\n<p>I did not know whether she would understand quickly enough.<\/p>\n<p>Another contraction.<\/p>\n<p>Closer.<\/p>\n<p>I breathed through it.<\/p>\n<p>When it passed, I whispered to my daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dinner upstairs continued.<\/p>\n<p>I heard glasses.<\/p>\n<p>Conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Then suddenly footsteps crossed the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Not one person.<\/p>\n<p>Several.<\/p>\n<p>A door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Voices changed.<\/p>\n<p>The easy rhythm of the party disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus shouted something.<\/p>\n<p>I crawled toward the bars.<\/p>\n<p>The basement door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus appeared at the top of the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Behind him stood a woman I recognized from one of his work events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s downstairs?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStorage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPipes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman leaned around him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus, that sounded like somebody crying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart hammered.<\/p>\n<p>I opened my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>His expression said everything.<\/p>\n<p>If I screamed, whatever happened next would happen immediately.<\/p>\n<p>So I screamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHELP!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman gasped.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus slammed the door.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs erupted.<\/p>\n<p>Voices.<\/p>\n<p>Questions.<\/p>\n<p>Furniture scraping.<\/p>\n<p>Then Marcus came running down.<\/p>\n<p>He was no longer pretending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stupid\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped himself against the cage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think that changes anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone heard me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe heard a noise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe heard me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll handle it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t handle all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face flushed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what I can handle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pounding came from upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Someone shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Another voice said something about calling police.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in three weeks, I saw fear.<\/p>\n<p>Real fear.<\/p>\n<p>He rushed upward.<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the bars.<\/p>\n<p>The house became chaotic.<\/p>\n<p>A woman demanded to know where I was.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus insisted everyone leave.<\/p>\n<p>Someone else shouted that they had already called 911.<\/p>\n<p>Then silence.<\/p>\n<p>Not true silence.<\/p>\n<p>The terrible kind where people are speaking too quietly for you to hear.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes passed.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps five.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps fifteen.<\/p>\n<p>My contractions were close enough now that I stopped trying to measure them.<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard sirens.<\/p>\n<p>Faint.<\/p>\n<p>Growing louder.<\/p>\n<p>I began crying before I could stop myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I feared them.<\/p>\n<p>Because I had forgotten what rescue sounded like.<\/p>\n<p>The sirens stopped outside.<\/p>\n<p>Car doors slammed.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy footsteps entered the house.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s voice rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot come in here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another voice answered.<\/p>\n<p>Calm.<\/p>\n<p>Authoritative.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lena.<\/p>\n<p>I knew her voice even through a floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMY SISTER IS IN THAT HOUSE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed the bars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLENA!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps rushed toward the basement.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus shouted.<\/p>\n<p>The door opened.<\/p>\n<p>A police officer appeared first.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Their faces changed when they saw me.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I must have looked barely human.<\/p>\n<p>Pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>Bruised.<\/p>\n<p>Half-starved.<\/p>\n<p>Trapped behind welded steel.<\/p>\n<p>The first officer approached carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMa\u2019am, can you hear me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Detective Harris.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the bars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sister?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe contacted us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe message?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe received enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The phone had done it.<\/p>\n<p>One percent had been enough.<\/p>\n<p>Behind Harris, Marcus appeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is insane,\u201d he said. \u201cShe\u2019s my wife. She has serious problems.
