Looking at him too long could provoke an argument. Looking away could provoke a different one. Asking a question might be called disrespect; remaining silent might be called contempt.<\/p>\n<p>So I had learned patience.<\/p>\n<p>The phone showed a weak Wi-Fi signal.<\/p>\n<p>One bar.<\/p>\n<p>Enough, perhaps.<\/p>\n<p>But if I tried sending something large and the connection failed, the battery might die before anything escaped the basement.<\/p>\n<p>I needed something simple.<\/p>\n<p>Something Lena would understand.<\/p>\n<p>I opened our old message thread.<\/p>\n<p>The last conversation displayed on the screen was from months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Lena: Call me when you\u2019re alone.<\/p>\n<p>Me: I\u2019m fine.<\/p>\n<p>Lena: That wasn\u2019t what I asked.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at those words until they blurred.<\/p>\n<p>I had been so determined to protect the appearance of my marriage that I had helped Marcus isolate me.<\/p>\n<p>Another contraction began.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the phone and breathed through it.<\/p>\n<p>When the pain eased, I typed with shaking fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Lena. Dark trousers. White shirt. You went through things that didn\u2019t concern you. You kept talking to Lena after I told you she was poisoning you against me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>He had mentioned Lena.<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>I needed him talking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you locked me down here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou needed consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the baby?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something flickered across his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop using the baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m asking what happens if I go into labor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took another drink.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like your problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened, and this time not from a contraction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if something happens to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen something happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had known what he was capable of.<\/p>\n<p>Hearing him say it still hollowed something inside me.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs, someone called his name.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked toward the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSee?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey need me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I forced out another question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you telling them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you went to stay with family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when I don\u2019t come back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes settled on mine.<\/p>\n<p>He was silent long enough that I knew I had reached the edge of something important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou worry too much about the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he walked upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>I waited until the basement door closed.<\/p>\n<p>My hands shook as I pulled out the phone.<\/p>\n<p>The recording had captured everything.<\/p>\n<p>Battery: 3%.<\/p>\n<p>The message to Lena had failed.<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed a sob.<\/p>\n<p>Crying consumed energy I could no longer spare.<\/p>\n<p>Think.<\/p>\n<p>The Wi-Fi signal was strongest near the bars beneath the stairwell.<\/p>\n<p>Getting there meant crawling across the cage.<\/p>\n<p>I moved slowly.<\/p>\n<p>My knees screamed against the steel.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway across, another contraction struck.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped, forehead against the bars.<\/p>\n<p>This one was different.<\/p>\n<p>Deeper.<\/p>\n<p>Pressure followed it.<\/p>\n<p>When it ended, I looked down.<\/p>\n<p>There was moisture beneath me.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, I simply stared.<\/p>\n<p>Then another warm trickle ran along my thigh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My water might have broken.<\/p>\n<p>I had read enough during pregnancy to know labor could still take hours.<\/p>\n<p>Or it could move quickly.<\/p>\n<p>My body had been starved and injured for weeks. Nothing about this pregnancy was normal anymore.<\/p>\n<p>I reached the stair-side corner.<\/p>\n<p>Two Wi-Fi bars.<\/p>\n<p>I tried again.<\/p>\n<p>This time I sent only three words.<\/p>\n<p>Lena. Help. Basement.<\/p>\n<p>The symbol spun.<\/p>\n<p>Then changed.<\/p>\n<p>Delivered.<\/p>\n<p>My mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>No sound came out.<\/p>\n<p>Delivered.<\/p>\n<p>Three words had escaped.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed the phone against my forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Battery: 2%.<\/p>\n<p>A message appeared almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Who is this?<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>The number had no service.<\/p>\n<p>Lena might think it was spam.<\/p>\n<p>I typed:<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s me. Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>Before I could send it, the basement door opened.<\/p>\n<p>I shoved the phone beneath my body.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn came down.<\/p>\n<p>She carried a small plate.<\/p>\n<p>On it sat an apple.<\/p>\n<p>Even from several feet away I could see the bruising.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re late,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Her gaze went to the floor beneath me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re wet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy water broke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>For one second, maternal alarm overcame everything else.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at the welded latch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t supposed to weld it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence told me more than she intended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about the cage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut not the welding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were supposed to keep the key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her hand rose to the gold chain.<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought you were in control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus took your control too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen go upstairs and tell those people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mean you won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have always made everything difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the phone beneath my hip.<\/p>\n<p>Recording.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did I make difficult?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus had plans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat plans?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She went still.<\/p>\n<p>That hesitation mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat plans, Evelyn?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou ask too many questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why he put me here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She set the apple down outside the bars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should eat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in labor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you need strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne rotten apple?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved toward my stomach.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered my voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf my baby dies, you helped him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came here every morning. You had the key. You saw me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never touched you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t need to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was Marcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou brought the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face drained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept me alive just enough for him to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop recording me in your head like some prosecutor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart lurched.<\/p>\n<p>For one terrifying instant, I thought she knew.<\/p>\n<p>But she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou twist everything people say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I forced myself to breathe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is my son was under pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBusiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat business?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>I had gone too far.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEat the apple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy contractions are getting closer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her shoulders stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you walk upstairs now and leave me here, remember that you made that choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not turn around.<\/p>\n<p>After several seconds, she climbed the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>I waited for the door.<\/p>\n<p>Closed.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Battery: 1%.<\/p>\n<p>The recording was still running.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped it.<\/p>\n<p>One percent.<\/p>\n<p>I had perhaps one chance.<\/p>\n<p>I sent the unfinished message.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s me. Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>Delivered.<\/p>\n<p>Then I attached my location.<\/p>\n<p>The progress circle appeared.<\/p>\n<p>I watched it crawl.<\/p>\n<p>Ten percent.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty.<\/p>\n<p>The Wi-Fi weakened.<\/p>\n<p>I lifted the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-four.<\/p>\n<p>Another contraction began.<\/p>\n<p>I nearly dropped it.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-eight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sixty-one.<\/p>\n<p>The basement door opened.<\/p>\n<p>I heard Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>I killed the screen.<\/p>\n<p>He descended faster this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say to my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing she didn\u2019t already know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He came to the cage.<\/p>\n<p>His pleasant dinner-host expression had vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou upset her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe helped you imprison me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hand closed around a bar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to judge my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour guests might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something shifted in his face.<\/p>\n<p>I knew immediately I had made a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>He stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remained silent.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked around the basement.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>His suspicion sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He unlocked his phone and checked something.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the router.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps cameras.<\/p>\n<p>I had never known how closely he monitored the house.<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the cage floor.<\/p>\n<p>I moved my knee over the loose panel.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever you\u2019re hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>He crouched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Above us, the dinner guests laughed again.<\/p>\n<p>And beneath my knee, with one percent battery remaining, the phone was still trying to send my location to Lena.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=21063\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: Marcus Began Searching the Cage, So I Used the Only Weapon He Had Never Believed I Still Possessed<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did not send a message immediately.
