do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not specifically.<\/p>\n<p>But enough.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa dismissed it because Martin was young and angry.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, Martin returned under a different name.<\/p>\n<p>Preston Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Then borrowed Peter\u2019s history whenever it benefited him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did he convince everyone he was Peter?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Raymond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They had connected the identity themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Martin had allowed them.<\/p>\n<p>Another manipulation through omission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Margaret?\u201d I asked. laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me the one your mother gave you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou finally figured it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa answered, \u201cPeter died in Oregon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording had been made eight months before Grandpa died.<\/p>\n<p>The final bond date.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa had confronted him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you?\u201d Grandpa asked.<\/p>\n<p>The answer was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Cole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody in Frank\u2019s shop moved.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa asked why.<\/p>\n<p>Martin said Peter had been his closest friend.<\/p>\n<p>Peter told him everything about Samuel, Margaret, the deed, and the sale.<\/p>\n<p>Then Peter left Missouri.<\/p>\n<p>Martin remained angry.<\/p>\n<p>When Raymond later needed someone willing to intimidate Robert Harper, Martin presented himself as a private investigator using the name Preston Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond never cared who he really was.<\/p>\n<p>He cared that Martin was willing.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, people began assuming Preston was Peter because of what he knew.<\/p>\n<p>Martin encouraged it.<\/p>\n<p>Then he discovered how useful that assumption could be.<\/p>\n<p>He could claim Peter\u2019s grievance.<\/p>\n<p>Peter\u2019s connection to Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>Peter\u2019s potential Harper blood.<\/p>\n<p>And whenever someone challenged him, he could threaten to expose family secrets only Peter should have known.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou built your life out of another man\u2019s injury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin answered, \u201cYour family gave me the materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa told him the game was over.<\/p>\n<p>Martin disagreed.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said something that explained the final bond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still don\u2019t know what happened to Raymond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa stopped speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond Harper.<\/p>\n<p>The man whose confession started so much of this.<\/p>\n<p>We knew he disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>We did not know how he died.<\/p>\n<p>Or whether he had.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa asked, \u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin replied:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter wasn\u2019t the only dead man whose name I found useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tape ended.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the machine.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel spoke first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Martin also used Raymond\u2019s identity\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Martin.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had already stolen one identity had helped legally declare another man dead.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to find Raymond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter twenty-seven years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The final bond notation contained one more mark we had overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath P-17 \/ M.C. \/ 1975:<\/p>\n<p>R.H. \u2014 SOUTH.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Harper.<\/p>\n<p>Or Raymond Harper.<\/p>\n<p>Two R.H.s again.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa loved ambiguity until the end.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas studied it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouth could mean South County.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr South Harper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s South Harper?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArkansas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond owned a cabin there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did anyone last check it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert\u2019s answer was enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
