emergency motion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe grave documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My grip tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow does he know we found them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe attached photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Robert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotographs of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe steel case being removed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Only a handful of people had been there.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe claims the documents were stolen from Harper Industrial and therefore belong to the corporation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho owns Harper Industrial now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe attached corporate filings showing he is current president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on forged ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly. But until we establish that, he has standing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmediate surrender of the documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen is the hearing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Robert.<\/p>\n<p>Then the old stamping press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel, I found physical evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA machine Raymond used to alter equipment serial numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not move it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t planning to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotograph everything. Wide shots, serial numbers, surrounding structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward the open shed door.<\/p>\n<p>Headlights appeared at the gate.<\/p>\n<p>Two vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>One pickup.<\/p>\n<p>One dark sedan.<\/p>\n<p>Robert whispered, \u201cYou have to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pickup entered first.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it.<\/p>\n<p>Dale.<\/p>\n<p>The sedan followed.<\/p>\n<p>Alan\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at my father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou invited them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both vehicles stopped near the house.<\/p>\n<p>Doors opened.<\/p>\n<p>Dale stepped out.<\/p>\n<p>Alan followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Pam emerged from Alan\u2019s passenger side.<\/p>\n<p>All three together.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since this began, the entire living generation of the family who knew the secret was standing in one place.<\/p>\n<p>Robert moved in front of me.<\/p>\n<p>Dale called from the yard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNancy!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped around my father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale lifted both hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat phrase hasn\u2019t improved with repetition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alan moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>His face looked strained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNancy, Dale told us why he met Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Robert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pam glanced toward the shed.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re out of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward the road behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Another pair of headlights appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Not family.<\/p>\n<p>A county sheriff\u2019s vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel called again.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was sharp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNancy, Dale obtained a temporary preservation order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot remove or destroy any disputed corporate property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff\u2019s cruiser stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy stepped out.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale told the court you took original corporate records from Henry\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deputy approached.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rachel said the part that mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe judge ordered an inventory of everything in your possession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the copies in my purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Nancy. Dale included the savings bonds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow are the bonds corporate property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s exactly what we\u2019ll challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deputy stopped ten feet away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Ellis?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have an order to preserve and document certain materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy noticed him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir, your name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Dale.<\/p>\n<p>For forty-eight years, Robert Harper had lived by disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>This time he did something different.<\/p>\n<p>He faced the deputy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert Harper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alan closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Pam stared at the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Dale\u2019s face went blank.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy looked at his papers.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at Robert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert Harper?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Robert Harper declared deceased in 1978?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deputy reached for his radio.<\/p>\n<p>Dale whispered something I barely heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis changes everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt changes what you can prove.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=20999\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: My Father\u2019s Return Forced the Family Into Court, Where Dale Produced a Will Grandpa Had Never Signed in Front of Anyone<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I stared at the photograph until the edges of the room blurred.
