It doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you so afraid of them?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m afraid of what Grandpa convinced you they mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe you should be afraid of the documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes dropped toward my pocket.<\/p>\n<p>That tiny movement told me he knew I had something.<\/p>\n<p>Then a car door slammed outside.<\/p>\n<p>Pam appeared in the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>For one second, nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the open floor.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Dale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pam\u2019s face lost color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou opened it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She moved past him and knelt at the cavity.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers touched the clean-cut edge.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alan said, \u201cYou knew it was here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pam ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho took it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale swore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stood.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since this began, I believed him.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I trusted Dale.<\/p>\n<p>Because Pam looked genuinely terrified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else knew?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Pam stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart thudded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Pam said the last thing I expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took one slow breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother died twelve years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pam nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who could have removed the ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the ceiling, as though hearing footsteps no one else could hear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did you first come into the house after Grandpa died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe funeral week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore or after Dale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pam closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen somebody had already been here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother left instructions too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat instructions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pam swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Henry died before she could tell you everything, there was one person we were supposed to contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe made us promise never to give you the name unless the ledger disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Pam glanced at the empty cavity one more time.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cHis name is Thomas Reed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he have to do with my family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pam\u2019s answer came quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was the accountant who helped your father prove the company was being stolen.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=20995\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Accountant My Mother Hid for Decades Showed Me Why the Missing Eighty-Four Thousand Dollars Was Never Really Missing<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did not call Pam back.
