The woman was distressed. Your grandfather kept trying to calm her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the seventeen bonds spread across the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what I\u2019m trying to establish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were photocopies of documents faded almost to gray.<\/p>\n<p>The first page carried Grandpa\u2019s full name and a date.<\/p>\n<p>October 14, 1984.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the oldest bond.<\/p>\n<p>Same year.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Whitaker followed my gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese weren\u2019t purchased casually whenever your grandfather happened to have extra money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of a recurring arrangement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Grandpa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression told me the answer before she spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause nobody ever told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat does not change what the records say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I picked up one of the bonds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why do some list Grandpa or me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat registration is one reason I need the archived material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much are they worth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave me a measured look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wouldn\u2019t be my first question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would ask why somebody wanted them destroyed before you could bring them here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale\u2019s voice returned immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Burn them.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the closed office door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you tell whether somebody tried to claim them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you tell whether Pam\u2019s note means I could have been excluded?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot from what I have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She picked up the phone and called the records department.<\/p>\n<p>I listened to half a conversation filled with dates and account numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said Grandpa\u2019s full name.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote something down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re certain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead the notation to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then hung up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a beneficiary restriction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the arms of my chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this case, instructions were placed on the underlying account records beyond the ordinary registration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy Grandpa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is named?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed from sheer confusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I\u2019m the protected beneficiary, why is my family acting as though I stole something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t answer that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale told me to burn them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly what did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I repeated the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>When I finished, she looked down at the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not discuss these bonds with your cousins again until you understand what you have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause people generally do not demand the destruction of documents that cannot affect them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She copied the identifying information, then returned every original to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep these somewhere secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I leave them here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot without establishing the proper account process. For now, retain possession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I slid them back into the battered Bible cover.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Whitaker reached for another sheet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned it toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa\u2019s handwriting filled a short note.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the oversized H in Henry. It was the same H he had used on every birthday card.<\/p>\n<p>The message instructed the bank to release information about the bonds only to Nancy.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>If I never came, the assets were to remain untouched.<\/p>\n<p>Then I reached the final instruction.<\/p>\n<p>Dale was specifically barred from accessing the file.<\/p>\n<p>I read the sentence twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Grandpa name Dale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did he write this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed to the date.<\/p>\n<p>November 1998.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>That year carried too many memories.<\/p>\n<p>My first husband, Robert Ellis, had left.<\/p>\n<p>I had been pregnant with my second son.<\/p>\n<p>Money had been so tight that I sometimes stood in grocery aisles calculating whether I could afford milk and laundry detergent in the same trip.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa had shown up repeatedly during those months.<\/p>\n<p>He brought groceries.<\/p>\n<p>Fixed the heater.<\/p>\n<p>Paid an electric bill I had hidden under a stack of magazines because I was too embarrassed to ask for help.<\/p>\n<p>One night he sat at my kitchen table while my oldest boy slept in the next room.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered his face now.<\/p>\n<p>Not the words exactly, but the warning beneath them.<\/p>\n<p>Family, he had told me, could convince itself that taking control of your life was the same thing as protecting you.<\/p>\n<p>I thought he meant my divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Then he had glanced toward the room where my son slept and said he worried about what other people might take from me.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I assumed he meant custody.<\/p>\n<p>Sitting in Mrs. Whitaker\u2019s office almost three decades later, I wondered whether he had meant something entirely different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to go back to the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyebrows lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I stopped searching when I found the bonds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were searching?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I was cleaning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t go alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But I was already standing.<\/p>\n<p>The drive to Moberly took less than an hour.<\/p>\n<p>It felt longer.<\/p>\n<p>Pam\u2019s handwritten question kept returning to me.<\/p>\n<p>Could N.L.H. be excluded if unclaimed?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe she had known I was entitled to something.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the estate sale was being rushed because Grandpa\u2019s death created a deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe I was connecting things that had nothing to do with one another.<\/p>\n<p>Then I turned onto Grandpa\u2019s street and saw Dale\u2019s pickup beside the garage.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped at the curb.<\/p>\n<p>He had told me he would be working that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The basement window was open.<\/p>\n<p>I knew I had closed it.<\/p>\n<p>The front door was unlocked.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, drawers had been pulled from Grandpa\u2019s desk. Cabinet doors stood open in the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Someone was searching the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard metal scrape concrete below me.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the basement door.<\/p>\n<p>The light was already on.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the stairs, Dale knelt beside the furnace with a screwdriver.<\/p>\n<p>The loose panel had been completely removed.<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes went first to my face.<\/p>\n<p>Then to my purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou went to the bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not a question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you tell me to burn the bonds?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they\u2019re worthless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you tearing apart the wall where they were hidden?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>For a second I saw something unfamiliar in him\u2014not anger exactly, but calculation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand what you\u2019re getting into.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen help me understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mean you won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed one hand across his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa didn\u2019t leave those bonds to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bank disagrees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Color drained from his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho did you speak with?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Whitaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took a step backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t have gone to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause now they\u2019ll open the old records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word cracked through the basement.<\/p>\n<p>I held my ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened, Dale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, quieter, \u201cYour mother wasn\u2019t supposed to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence hit harder than anything else he had said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He immediately looked as though he regretted speaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she find out?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Alan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy brother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk him why Grandpa stopped speaking to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dale gave a humorless laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw Alan at Christmas. That isn\u2019t the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa loved Alan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat loving somebody doesn\u2019t mean trusting them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He moved toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped aside rather than let him brush against me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere the bonds meant for me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave them alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders sagged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you\u2019re going to find out why Grandpa hid them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>By the time I followed, his truck was backing into the street.<\/p>\n<p>I stood at the kitchen window until it disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>A small click sounded behind me.<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa\u2019s old wall clock beside the pantry hung crooked.<\/p>\n<p>He had been obsessive about that clock. Every Sunday he wound it. Every time one of us bumped it, he straightened it without thinking.<\/p>\n<p>I lifted it from the hook.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was a narrow opening cut into the plaster.<\/p>\n<p>Inside rested a brass key tied to faded blue string.<\/p>\n<p>A handwritten tag hung from it.<\/p>\n<p>Storage \u2014 Moberly First National \u2014 Box 114.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth number from the empty folder.<\/p>\n<p>114.<\/p>\n<p>I slipped the key into my palm.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Alan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale told you I\u2019m here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me what you found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my fingers around the key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Grandpa leave those bonds for me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since entering the bank, I had an answer nobody could soften.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad made us promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Our father.<\/p>\n<p>The man I had believed dead since childhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat promise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat we\u2019d let you have them when the time was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is \u2018we\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped breathing for a second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Grandpa\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the labels attached to everything my relatives planned to sell.<\/p>\n<p>The walnut hutch.<\/p>\n<p>The tractor.<\/p>\n<p>The desk.<\/p>\n<p>The file cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, the estate sale had seemed merely rushed.<\/p>\n<p>Now it looked different.<\/p>\n<p>If Grandpa had hidden documents throughout the house, emptying it quickly would accomplish something far more useful than settling an estate.<\/p>\n<p>It could erase whatever he had left behind.<\/p>\n<p>I put Box 114\u2019s key in my pocket.<\/p>\n<p>The estate sale could wait.<\/p>\n<p>Before anyone emptied Grandpa\u2019s house, I was going to discover what he had locked away.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=20993\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Box 114 Contained My Forged Signature, a Photograph of a Dead Man, and a Letter Grandpa Never Wanted Anyone Else Reading<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mrs. Whitaker did not answer immediately.
