tape.

Rachel photographed everything.

The deputy recorded the recovery.

When the case was finally lifted free, I expected it to feel like victory.

Instead, I felt grief.

My mother had known enough to bury evidence under her own grave.

What had her life been like, carrying this?

We opened the case at Rachel’s office.

Inside were five binders.

A corporate seal.

Stock certificates.

Original deeds.

Three notarized affidavits.

A small box of cassette tapes.

And one envelope addressed to me.

I recognized my mother’s handwriting immediately.

Nancy.

No last name.

No legal language.

Just Nancy.

Rachel asked if I wanted privacy.

“No.”

I opened it.

My mother began by saying she had spent years telling herself silence was protection.

Then she wrote something I had never heard from any member of my family.

She had been wrong.

Her words were plain.

She wrote that Robert’s disappearance protected me from immediate danger, but the lies continued long after the danger justified them.

She blamed herself.

She blamed Grandpa.

She blamed fear.

Then she explained the company.

Raymond had stolen first.

Small amounts.

Then equipment.

Then property.

Dale discovered the scheme as a young man and did not expose it.

He expanded it.

He forged approvals.

He moved valuable properties into companies that Raymond controlled and eventually passed to him.

My mother discovered what Dale was doing because he asked her to imitate Grandpa’s signature on what he called an insurance form.

She refused.

Later she found documents using a copy of her handwriting.

That was when she realized Dale had learned to reproduce signatures.

Including mine.

I stopped.

“Dale forged my her.”

“Pam?”

“Yes.”

I continued reading.

My mother wrote that Pamela Harper had once forged my name.

But not on the safe-deposit restriction.

Pam had signed my name years earlier to protect one parcel from being transferred to Dale.

The 2001 bank forgery was different.

Dale had done that.

Grandpa let Alan believe Pam was responsible because exposing Dale too early would have warned him that the family was preserving evidence.

I put the letter down.

“Even now Grandpa’s lies are still unfolding.”

No one disagreed.

I resumed.

The affidavit explained that Dale paid my ex-husband Robert Ellis fifty thousand dollars.

Not simply to stay quiet about my trust.

To obtain samples of my signature.

My stomach turned.

Robert had access to everything then.

Tax forms.

Insurance forms.

Mortgage papers.

Checks.

Dale used those samples for years.

The letter continued.

My mother discovered the payments after my divorce.

That was why Grandpa began moving evidence out of houses and banks.

That was why Box 114 was restricted.

That was why Dale was banned from certain files.

And that was why Grandpa bought bonds over time.

Each one corresponded to a transaction Dale attempted to erase.

Seventeen bonds.

Seventeen transactions.

Rachel leaned forward.

“If those dates match these deeds, this is significant.”

Thomas said, “They will.”

We opened the first after you found the bonds.”

“Who did he contact?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Pam.”

“I put a tracker on you because I thought Dale would follow.”

“You tracked the wrong person.”

“No.”

Her voice dropped.

“I tracked both of you.”

The room went silent.

Then she said, “And Dale drove somewhere last night.”

“Where?”

“A farmhouse outside Macon.”

My heart thudded.

The farmhouse.

The one where my father had hidden after the accident.

“Was Dad there?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because after Dale left, another man arrived.”

“Who?”

“I couldn’t see his face.”

“Then why does that matter?”

Pam hesitated.

“Because he drove Grandpa’s Buick.”

I frowned.

Grandpa’s Buick had supposedly been sold two years earlier.

“Who has Grandpa’s Buick?”

“That’s the problem.”

Pam’s voice dropped almost to a whisper.

“No one was supposed to.”

A new message appeared while we were talking.

Unknown number.

A photograph loaded.

The farmhouse.

Taken at dusk.

In front of it stood a man.

Older.

Thin.

But unmistakable from the photograph in Box 114.

My father.

Robert Harper.

And beside him was Dale.

The timestamp was from the previous night.

I stared at it.

My father had warned me about Dale.

Now they were meeting in secret.

Under the picture was a single sentence.

Ask Robert which side he is really on.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Followed My Father to the Farmhouse and Learned
