seventeen bonds.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever broke in had known exactly what to search for.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang while an officer photographed the damaged lock.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>At first I heard only breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Then an elderly man spoke my name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNancy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money was never the real secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandfather kept those bonds because he knew one day you might need proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProof of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat the Harper family fortune never belonged to were preparing an estate sale.<\/p>\n<p>Until that moment, I had thought they were dividing Grandpa\u2019s belongings.<\/p>\n<p>Now I understood they might be doing something else
