I was wrong. Mercy chosen for another adult is often control wearing a kinder face.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke after that sentence.<\/p>\n<p>My father looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>The parallel did not need explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel ended with one final instruction.<\/p>\n<p>If Victor\u2019s sons ever come looking, give them the schedule. Do not protect property at the cost of people. A house can be replaced. A life cannot.<\/p>\n<p>Mom folded the letter carefully.<\/p>\n<p>For years, Daniel assumed Samuel valued the house because evidence was hidden there.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had understood the you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one stops being useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s where you\u2019re wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then his voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beneficiary schedule is meaningless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you won\u2019t mind if we give it to the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>Longer.<\/p>\n<p>There.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Small but real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think paperwork will save you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people telling the truth at the same time might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel breathed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been talking to Michael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something bitter entered Daniel\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>The older brother.<\/p>\n<p>The one who knew.<\/p>\n<p>The one who disappeared rather than fight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have Victor\u2019s confession,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou went into the crypt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people visit cemeteries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt midnight with a pry father watched too.<\/p>\n<p>I asked again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you kill Victor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel answered softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor killed himself years before his body disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not an answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is his body?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Michael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael went pale.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour uncle knows more than he told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then the call ended.<\/p>\n<p>All eyes turned toward Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan spoke first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t kill Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one asked that,\u201d Nathan said.<\/p>\n<p>Michael rubbed his floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel had her declared incompetent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne gasped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gained control of her finances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pattern had begun inside his own family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe sold the house,\u201d Michael continued. \u201cBut I hid the recording before that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house still stands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan was already searching the address.<\/p>\n<p>Then his expression froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Property record.<\/p>\n<p>Current owner.<\/p>\n<p>A holding company.<\/p>\n<p>The same company named in one of Daniel\u2019s recent ledger entries.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had quietly bought Evelyn Hale\u2019s old house back six years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph.<\/p>\n<p>A house burning.<\/p>\n<p>Flames pouring from upstairs windows.<\/p>\n<p>Timestamp: two minutes ago.<\/p>\n<p>Michael stood so quickly his chair fell over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had found the second copy.<\/p>\n<p>And rather than risk us finding it too, he had set his own
