The metal box rested on Mom’s knees, her husband’s letter folded neatly inside.

She kept one hand on it.

Not sentimentally.

More like evidence.

“Are you angry with him?” I asked.

She stared through the windshield.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

That surprised her enough to make her look at us.”

“Yes.”

“And let you grow up believing your father didn’t want you.”

I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.

“Yes.”

Mom looked away.

“That is not protection.”

“No.”

We let the silence return.

When we reached her street, every light in the house was off.

Nothing unusual.

Still, I slowed before turning into the driveway.

Marianne pulled in behind us.

Mom whispered, “The ledger.”

I nodded.

Daniel believed it was somewhere inside.

Which meant he might believe the house was worth entering whether Mom cooperated or not.

I called the police before we went inside.

An officer arrived fifteen minutes later and walked through the rooms with us.

No forced entry.

No broken windows.

No obvious disturbance.

But Daniel had already spent time alone in this house before we knew who he was.

That changed the meaning of every unlocked drawer.

Every cabinet.

Every closet he might have seen.

Once the officer left, Mom locked the doors.

Then we began searching.

My father had said she already had the ledger.

That could mean literally.

A book.

A notebook.

An accounting record.

Something disguised.

Or something hidden among objects she had owned for decades.

We started in the office.

Tax folders.

Old receipts.

Insurance files.

Warranty books.

Nothing.

At two in the morning, Marianne opened a drawer and held up a spiral notebook.

“This?”

Mom barely glanced.

“Grocery lists.”

Marianne flipped pages.

“Your grocery lists from 2008 are extremely detailed.”

“I compare prices.”

“Of course you do.”

Even exhausted, their old rhythm surfaced occasionally.

It felt strange and comforting.

I searched the hallway cabinet.

At the back were old photo albums.

One contained pictures of my father.

Mom sat on the floor beside me.

For a few minutes, we forgot the ledger.

There he was holding me as a baby.

There he was painting the fence.

There he was asleep in a chair with my small body sprawled across his chest.

I stared too long.

Mom touched the corner of the photograph.

“You have his hands.”

I closed the album.

“We need to keep looking.”

At three fifteen, Marianne found a false bottom in an old desk drawer.

My heart jumped.

Underneath lay nothing except two expired passports and a set of keys.

Mom recognized one key.

“Garage cabinet.”

We searched it.

Tools.

Paint thinner.

A rusted tackle box.

No ledger.

By sunrise, the kitchen looked as though thieves had already been through it.

Cabinet doors stood open.

Boxes covered the floor.

Stacks of paper occupied the table.

Mom made coffee.

“What if he lied?”

Marianne rubbed her eyes.

“Your husband?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To keep Daniel away from wherever the ledger really is.”

“That’s possible.”

I looked around the kitchen.

“Or ‘you already have it’ doesn’t mean what we think.”

Mom handed me coffee.

“What else could it mean?”

I looked toward the doorway.

My childhood height marks were still there.

Thin pencil lines climbed the painted trim.

Age six.

Age seven.

Age nine.

My father’s handwriting beside some.

Mom’s beside others.

I stood.

“What?”

I crossed the room.

One line near the bottom had no age.

Just four numbers.

3142.

Mom came beside me.

“What is that?”

“You tell me.”

She frowned.

“I thought it was a measurement.”

“It isn’t.”

“Maybe your father wrote it.”

The hospital room combination.

My heart started beating faster.

“What was the room number again?”

Mom’s face changed.

“3142.”

I crouched.

The number had been written beside the baseboard.

Not among the ordinary height marks.

Lower.

Almost hidden.

I ran my fingers along the wood.

One section shifted.

“Mom.”

She knelt.

The trim had been cut years ago, then fitted back so carefully that paint concealed the seam.

Marianne brought a screwdriver.

We pried gently.

A narrow section came loose.

Behind it was a cavity.

Inside sat a small packet wrapped in plastic.

Mom covered her mouth.

I pulled it out.

Not a ledger.

A key.

Brass.

Old.

Attached to it was a metal tag stamped with a number.

118.

Marianne stared.

“Safe-deposit box?”

“Maybe.”

Mom sat back on her heels.

“He said the ledger never left the house.”

I studied the key.

“He didn’t say it was still here.”

“That sounds like a trick Daniel would use.”

“Maybe Dad learned from him.”

Mom did not appreciate that.

We searched the cavity again.

Nothing.

Then I noticed a folded piece of paper tucked against the side.

Three words.

Not the bank.

We all stared.

Marianne whispered, “Well, that narrows down nothing.”

The sun had risen fully by then.

We needed sleep.

Instead, Daniel called.

Mom’s phone.

She put him on speaker.

“Loretta.”

She sounded different when she answered.

Steadier.

“What?”

“I hear you’ve been traveling.”

None of us moved.

“You’re following us,” she said.

“I don’t need to.”

“Then how do you know?”

“You always assume surveillance is more complicated than people.”

Mom looked at me.

He could have someone watching.

Or he could simply know our likely choices.

“Where is my husband?”

Daniel ignored her.

“Did June still have the box?”

Marianne inhaled sharply.

Daniel laughed.

“Tell Marianne she still breathes too loudly when she’s frightened.”

Marianne stepped closer to the phone.

“You don’t frighten me anymore.”

“That is the sort of sentence frightened people rehearse.”

Mom interrupted.

“What do you want?”

“The ledger.”

There it was.

No more pretense about the house.

Mom said, “I don’t have it.”

“I believe you.”

That surprised all of us.

“Then why are you calling?”

“Because your daughter will find it.”

He knew me well enough to be dangerous.

I spoke.

“What’s in it?”

“Old grievances.”

“Names.”

“Some.”

“Payments.”

“Perhaps.”

“Proof.”

Silence.

That silence answered more clearly than words.

“Why did Dad take it?”

“Because he thought information could purchase courage.”

“Did it?”

“No.”

“Where is he?”

Daniel sighed.

“You keep returning to that.”

“Yes.”

“Your father made choices.”

“So did you.”

“Of course.”

“Did you hurt him?”

“No.”

“Is he alive?”

A pause.

Mom gripped the table.

Daniel said, “He was when I last saw him.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

The timing matched June.

“Where did he go?”

“He intended to see Loretta.”

Mom closed her eyes.

“Why didn’t he?”

“You should ask him.”

“If we could, we would.”

Daniel became quiet.

Then he said, “Perhaps you can.”

The call ended.

We stared at the phone.

“That was deliberate,” Marianne said.

“What was?”

“He wants us believing your husband is reachable.”

“He might be.”

“Or he wants us searching.”

I held up the key.

“Either way, we find out what this opens before Daniel does.”

Mom looked at the metal tag.

118.

Then she said, “I’ve seen that number.”

“Where?”

She went to the living room.

From an old cabinet, she pulled out a wooden box filled with postcards and receipts.

She searched until she found a yellowed receipt.

A storage company.

Harrison & Vale.

Unit 118.

Twenty-nine years earlier.

Rented by my father.

The facility still existed.

We called.

The receptionist found no current unit under his legal name.

I gave the alias from Bellhaven.

Thomas Reed.

Silence on the line.

“Yes,” she said.

My pulse jumped.

“There is a unit.”

“Number 118?”

“No.”

I looked at Mom.

“What number?”

“318.”

That made no sense.

Then the receptionist added, “But there’s a note attached to the account.”

“What does it say?”

“Access requires the original brass key marked it.”

Thomas Reed.

My father.

Three months ago.

We had finally found a place he had definitely been.

I asked when he left.

The receptionist checked.

“He didn’t close the unit.”

“Is it paid?”

“Yes.”

“Until when?”

Another
