They treated the photographs more seriously than I expected, particularly the one taken through Mom\u2019s kitchen window.<\/p>\n<p>The cassette recordings created a different problem.<\/p>\n<p>Too old.<\/p>\n<p>Too incomplete.<\/p>\n<p>Potentially significant, but not proof of what Daniel was doing now.<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>I still hated it.<\/p>\n<p>By the time we stepped outside, the rain had stopped. I\u2019m telling you what that cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you suggest? That I sit at home wondering whether my husband is ten miles away? Fifty? A broken porch rail. A leaking pipe. A heater that failed one December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t talk much,\u201d June said. \u201cPaid cash. Worse, he threatened to involve Mom.<\/p>\n<p>My father believed that if he disappeared, Daniel would lose leverage.<\/p>\n<p>He had been wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel found him repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p>Every time my father tried to return, Daniel reminded him that the old documents still existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat documents?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Mom kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>The answer came two paragraphs later.<\/p>\n<p>My father had altered loan records.<\/p>\n<p>He had moved money through a business account to cover medical expenses.<\/p>\n<p>He had forged a partner\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n<p>The third man in the old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>His business partner.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel discovered it and turned the crime into permanent leverage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did break the law,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked devastated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That did not erase Daniel\u2019s manipulation.<\/p>\n<p>But it complicated my father.<\/p>\n<p>He was neither the coward I had imagined nor the innocent victim I wanted him to become.<\/p>\n<p>He had made desperate choices.<\/p>\n<p>Then frightened ones.<\/p>\n<p>Then years of worse choices to hide the first ones.<\/p>\n<p>Mom continued.<\/p>\n<p>My father wrote that Daniel eventually stopped threatening prison.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he threatened exposure.<\/p>\n<p>By then, my father believed returning would destroy the life Mom had rebuilt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe decided for us,\u201d Mom whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her anger returned.<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>Grief without anger would have turned him into a saint, and the truth did not support that.<\/p>\n<p>The letter ended with an instruction.<\/p>\n<p>If Daniel returns to Loretta, play file three.<\/p>\n<p>We turned on the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Six audio files appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Mom selected the third.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s voice filled the tiny office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re hearing this, Daniel has gone back to Loretta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sounded older.<\/p>\n<p>Tired.<\/p>\n<p>But clear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not give him the house. The house was never the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>My father continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants the ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hid it where he could never search without revealing what he knew about us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father explained that Daniel had kept records of loans, coercive agreements and payments involving many people. Years ago, my father had stolen a copy.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger could connect Daniel to people he had pressured for decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>My father paused on the recording.<\/p>\n<p>Then said, \u201cLoretta, you already have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at the device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thinks you do,\u201d Marianne said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why he wants the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe isn\u2019t after the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thinks the ledger is hidden there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s final words made everything worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel does not know exactly where I put it.
