What I ordered. Which songs I skipped. What annoyed me at work. If I mentioned something once, he remembered it months later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Mom praising Benedict for knowing she hated lilies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing suddenly. That was the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel began asking where Marianne had been, then why. He wanted to know who called. He disliked certain friends. He offered to manage bills because he was \u201cbetter with numbers.\u201d He persuaded her to combine accounts, then complained about purchases so small she began hiding grocery receipts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never had to shout every day,\u201d Marianne said. \u201cIf someone only frightens you occasionally, you spend the rest of your time telling yourself they aren\u2019t frightening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me steadily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I tried to leave, he told me I would regret humiliating him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe made people doubt me before I could speak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had cultivated friends, professional contacts and neighbors who considered him generous, patient and dependable. Marianne, meanwhile, became nervous and withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo when you finally said something,\u201d I said, \u201cyou looked unstable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you get away?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left almost everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mom know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your mother knew me before Daniel. She knew who I had been. I couldn\u2019t bear to let her see what I had become.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe would have helped you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why disappear from her completely?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Daniel knew Loretta mattered to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chill moved through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked about her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter I left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne had received calls from unknown numbers. Some were silent. Others contained messages about people she loved. Nothing explicit enough to take to police at the time, she said, but clear enough for her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne message mentioned Loretta\u2019s street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew he knew where Mom lived?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you never warned her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought he moved on. He vanished. I heard he was using different names. Then years passed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked sick with regret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI convinced myself silence was protecting everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pattern was becoming unbearable.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne vanished.<\/p>\n<p>My father vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Every person around him seemed to believe disappearance was safer than confrontation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat has he been doing since?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne said she had heard fragments. Sometimes simply a helpful friend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he steal from them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t prove that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever try?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried proving many things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression told me how that had gone.<\/p>\n<p>Then she stood and walked to a desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something you need to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From a drawer she removed her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo months ago, I got a message from a number I didn\u2019t recognize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She found it and handed me the screen.<\/p>\n<p>The message contained a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>My mother stood outside a restaurant wearing a blue coat.<\/p>\n<p>Beside her was Benedict.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the date.<\/p>\n<p>This was before Mom had told me she was seeing anyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho sent this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beneath the photograph were four words.<\/p>\n<p>He is doing it again.<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you call Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never mentioned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t answer. I didn\u2019t know whether it was another identity or whether the sender had made a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what terrifies me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she has money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother isn\u2019t wealthy in the way newspapers use that word. But she owns her house. She has retirement savings. She is careful. Independent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she has something to take.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I paced toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Daniel could find richer targets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne\u2019s face had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think this is personal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there is a reason he chose Loretta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Mom.<\/p>\n<p>I answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice shook so badly I barely recognized it.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Marianne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m with Marianne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom whispered, \u201cCome home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was already reaching for my keys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart slammed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBenedict?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t let him inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom started crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another voice sounded faintly behind her.<\/p>\n<p>A man\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>Calm.<\/p>\n<p>Close.<\/p>\n<p>Mom lowered hers further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnows what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I know who he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne rose beside me.<\/p>\n<p>I put the phone on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, get outside. Go to Mrs. Dawson\u2019s. Anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked him why he lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat he never lied.
