Around three in the morning, I gave up, made coffee and placed the photograph beside Daniel’s old letter on the kitchen table.

The envelope had softened with age. A crease ran through the middle where I had folded it during one of the dozens of times I reread it years ago.

Back then, the letter had felt like abandonment with extra steps.

Daniel apologized for leaving suddenly. He told me not to search for him. He said there were circumstances I did not understand and people better left alone. Most of it was frustratingly vague.

One sentence had never fitted the rest.

If he returned, I was not to allow him near my family.

At twenty-something, I had assumed the warning came from fear or paranoia. Daniel had been under pressure near the end. I remembered phone calls he took outside, conversations that stopped when I entered a room, the increasing frequency with which he looked through windows before leaving restaurants.

But my family had never met him.

Why warn me about them?

Now Daniel was calling himself Benedict and dating my mother.

At eight, Mom texted.

You were strange last night.
