nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it hard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still get a little hit of safety from knowing more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Not gone.<\/p>\n<p>Managed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think change would scare me more if he said that part disappeared,\u201d I told Dr. Morris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I wouldn\u2019t believe him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Patterns do not evaporate.<\/p>\n<p>They become visible enough to interrupt.<\/p>\n<p>That had become our definition of progress.<\/p>\n<p>Not purity.<\/p>\n<p>Awareness plus action.<\/p>\n<p>A few months later, Travis made his own mistake.<\/p>\n<p>His company hired too quickly for an expansion that arrived slower understand you now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, we finally stopped keeping separate emergency grocery money.<\/p>\n<p>Not accounts.<\/p>\n<p>We still had those.<\/p>\n<p>But after the card incident, I had always kept a few hundred dollars in cash tucked in a kitchen container.<\/p>\n<p>Not hidden from Travis.<\/p>\n<p>Just there.<\/p>\n<p>Backup.<\/p>\n<p>One day I noticed the envelope had not been touched in years.<\/p>\n<p>I counted it.<\/p>\n<p>Four hundred dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Travis walked in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmergency grocery money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still have that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He fail.<\/p>\n<p>Because if an account failed tomorrow, I had several others.<\/p>\n<p>If Travis vanished tomorrow, I knew every bill.<\/p>\n<p>If something changed, I knew what I owned.<\/p>\n<p>The emergency envelope had served its psychological purpose.<\/p>\n<p>It no longer represented preparedness.<\/p>\n<p>It represented an old fear.<\/p>\n<p>I deposited the cash into my account.<\/p>\n<p>All but forty-three dollars.<\/p>\n<p>That amount made me smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d Travis asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaddy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He understood.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the forty-three dollars in the workshop beneath the framed original forty-three.<\/p>\n<p>A second label:<\/p>\n<p>JUNE\u2019S FORMER GROCERY RESERVE \u2014 $43<\/p>\n<p>Travis laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re making a museum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRespect the collection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Years later, visitors would probably think we were strange.<\/p>\n<p>They would be correct.<\/p>\n<p>But those two sets of forty-three dollars told a story no financial statement could.<\/p>\n<p>Daddy hid emergency cash because he believed in preparedness.<\/p>\n<p>I kept emergency cash because I once lost access to shared money.<\/p>\n<p>Same amount.<\/p>\n<p>Different fear.<\/p>\n<p>Now both could become memory.<\/p>\n<p>That evening I stood at the grocery-store register again.<\/p>\n<p>Not the same cashier.<\/p>\n<p>Not the same year.<\/p>\n<p>I used a card.<\/p>\n<p>Approved.<\/p>\n<p>The receipt printed.<\/p>\n<p>I barely noticed.<\/p>\n<p>That was the real
