story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was not your crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward Peter\u2019s absence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I benefited from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At least she understood the difference.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew still held the adoption papers.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stood near him.<\/p>\n<p>Neither knew what to do with the relationship between them.<\/p>\n<p>I understood that too.<\/p>\n<p>I asked Helen, \u201cWhat will we find at St. Agnes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandmother\u2019s account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Keene?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf the Daltons?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRose wrote about Arthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt tired immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat could she possibly know about Arthur? He was a child then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot Arthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Vale family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father worked for Keene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur father was a mechanic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the institute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe maintained the equipment used in Room Seventeen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Vale family had been connected before Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Generations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Arthur know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus whispered, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it sounded like hope.<\/p>\n<p>Helen continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRose believed the Vale mechanic helped her move the archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur\u2019s father helped my grandmother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he discovered what Elias was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked stunned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was his name in the records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew\u2019s middle name was Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>We all turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>He looked down at Tommy\u2019s papers.<\/p>\n<p>Coincidence?<\/p>\n<p>Or another name preserved through people who knew more than they admitted?<\/p>\n<p>I asked Helen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Tommy Mercer know Thomas Vale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas was Tommy\u2019s godfather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew stared.<\/p>\n<p>The families were not connected by accident.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy had not simply stumbled into my son\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>The network around us was older and more deliberate than any of us had understood.<\/p>\n<p>Helen looked at Andrew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTommy was chosen because Thomas Vale trusted his family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChosen by whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandmother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rose had helped choose where Andrew would go decades after her own work with Keene.<\/p>\n<p>Impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Rose died before Andrew was born.<\/p>\n<p>I said so.<\/p>\n<p>Helen nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Keene\u2019s work ever reached another Higgins daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>Rose had anticipated recurrence.<\/p>\n<p>Not me specifically.<\/p>\n<p>A pattern.<\/p>\n<p>A contingency.<\/p>\n<p>Helen\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandmother knew men like Elias did not stop because someone asked them to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the bracelet in Andrew\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she built an escape route before you were born.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=20488\">Click here to continue reading: PART 20: Rose Higgins Left an Escape Plan Decades Before I Was Born, and Its Last Instruction Named the Person Meant to Protect Andrew<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Helen Dalton was missing.
