Arthur helped before he tried to stop them.”

A pause.

“But none of them poisoned me in 1970.”

Vivian closed her eyes.

My heart hammered.

“The person who poisoned me was Edward.”

My uncle.

Harold Greene’s father.

Richard had suspected Vivian.

Arthur had apparently known otherwise.

Margaret continued.

“Edward thought I would expose the Higgins trust and destroy his arrangement with Robert.”

So money.

Again.

“He failed to kill me.”

Another pause.

“In 1982, he is trying again.”

My blood chilled.

Edward had poisoned her twice.

“He came to my house three nights ago.”

I remembered my mother becoming ill suddenly.

She had died four days later.

“I told Arthur.”

Her voice weakened.

“He wants to move Martha and David away. I told him no more running.”

I began crying.

“If I die, Arthur has the evidence.”

A long silence.

Then:

“But Edward is not the person I fear most.”

Everyone in the room went still.

“I fear Richard Hale.”

Richard was not with us.

My skin turned cold.

Margaret continued.

“Richard has convinced everyone he is helping.”

Frank whispered, “No.”

“He helped Vivian disappear. He helped Arthur move records. He helped Robert hide money. Every side believes Richard belongs to them.”

I remembered Richard at the warehouse.

Richard at the clinic.

Richard administering the drug after Arthur collapsed.

Always present.

Always useful.

“He has copies of everything.”

Margaret coughed.

“If the truth ever begins coming out, Richard will try to control it.”

My hand tightened around the table.

“Do not let him.”

The recording crackled.

Then my mother said the sentence that changed the entire night again.

“Richard is not protecting Martha.”

A pause.

“He is protecting himself.”

Another.

“Because Richard was the camera operator at the lake house.”

I stared at the projector in my memory.

Someone had filmed me.

Someone had remained behind the camera.

Richard.

“He filmed Samuel.”

My mother continued.

“He filmed Arthur.”

Her voice shook.

“And when Samuel touched Martha, Richard kept filming.”

I felt sick.

“He could have stopped it.”

Silence.

“He did not.”

Andrew closed his eyes.

David took my hand.

Then Margaret said:

“Richard told me he needed evidence.”

Her voice became bitter.

“That is the lie he tells himself.”

The tape hissed.

“He wanted the film because Robert paid him for results.”

I stared toward the doorway.

Richard had not been merely adjacent to Keene.

He had been part of the project.

“He has spent twelve years pretending to help me undo something he helped create.”

Margaret’s voice faded.

Then returned one final time.

“If I die, do not trust Richard with Martha.”

The reel ended.

No one moved.

Then Frank’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“Richard escaped police custody.”

My stomach dropped.

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

“Where would he go?”

Nobody answered.

Then Chloe whispered, “The archive.”

“What archive?”

“Not Vivian’s.”

She looked at Marcus.

He understood.

“Arthur’s final archive.”

“Where?”

Marcus went pale.

“Caldwell headquarters.”

My company.

The place where Richard knew every floor, every service entrance, every old renovation Arthur had ever made.

David was already calling security.

Then his expression changed.

“No answer.”

He tried another number.

Nothing.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Richard.

One photograph.

Caldwell’s executive conference room.

On the table sat boxes I had never seen.

Beside them was a gasoline can.

The message beneath it contained six words.

COME ALONE OR MARGARET’S EVIDENCE BURNS.

I stared at the screen.

Andrew read it.

“No.”

David said the same.

I looked at my mother’s recorder.

Then at both my sons.

Richard still believed he understood how this worked.

Threat.

Isolation.

Control.

One frightened woman walking into a room built by men who expected her to obey.

I put the phone into my pocket.

“He wants me alone.”

Andrew crossed his arms.

“He’s not getting that.”

“No.”

David studied me.

“What are you thinking?”

I looked toward the basement stairs.

For the first time that night, the answer felt simple.

“I’m thinking Richard has spent fifty-six years collecting evidence because evidence is the only thing he trusts.”

“And?”

I picked up Margaret’s reel.

“So we make sure he understands that whatever he burns tonight no longer belongs only to him.”

I looked at Chloe.

“Call the press.”

Frank stared.

“The press?”

“All of them.”

Marcus began to understand.

I turned to the detective.

“Copy every file you legally can.”

Then to David.

“Send our board the documents concerning Caldwell.”

Andrew asked, “What about the family records?”

I looked at him.

“That decision belongs to the people in them.”

He nodded.

Good.

No more deciding for one another.

My phone vibrated again.

Richard.

TEN MINUTES.

I typed my first reply.

You spent fifty-six years hiding truth in rooms.

Then another.

I’m bringing witnesses.

His response arrived immediately.

NO.

I looked at my sons.

Then I typed:

That is no longer your decision.

Click
