it?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“1987.”

I had signed the check.

I remembered it.

A private note payoff Arthur told me was our last debt on the original acquisition.

He had not lied about the amount.

Only the person.

My mother had known.

Not every secret.

But enough.

The betrayal hurt differently.

Then my phone vibrated.

A photograph.

Chloe.

Seated in a wooden chair.

Alive.

Her cheek had a narrow cut.

Behind her was an old chalkboard.

Oakridge Nursing School.

Harold’s message appeared beneath it.

20 MINUTES.

Then another.

NO POLICE INSIDE.

David said, “We have to move.”

I looked at the cassette.

“What would Harold do if he knew this existed?”

Richard answered immediately.

“Destroy it.”

“Then it doesn’t leave here.”

Andrew stared at me.

“What are you planning?”

I slid the microcassette into my bra.

“Giving Harold exactly what he asked for.”

“The file?”

“Yes.”

“But not the real evidence.”

I looked at the stack of papers.

“We take the folder.”

David understood first.

“We photograph everything.”

“All of it.”

“What about Keene’s notes?”

“Make copies.”

Andrew’s mouth tightened.

“You’re treating this like a business negotiation.”

“No.”

I closed the file.

“I’m treating it like the first negotiation in fifty-six years where I know the other side is lying.”

We worked fast.

Police photographed every page and duplicated the contents.

The original folder went back into my hands.

Daniel said the nursing school had two entrances and an old tunnel connecting it to a former dormitory.

“Harold knows it?”

“Yes.”

“Vivian?”

“Yes.”

“Chloe?”

“Probably not.”

I turned toward the detective.

“You go through the tunnel.”

He hesitated.

“Mrs. Caldwell—”

“You want Chloe alive.”

“Yes.”

“So do I.”

“We cannot use you as bait.”

“You already are.”

He did not like that.

Neither did I.

But it was true.

Harold had built this meeting around me.

Removing me would not remove the trap.

It would only make him improvise.

As we prepared to leave, Richard caught my arm.

“There’s something else.”

I pulled free.

“There always is.”

“About Margaret’s tape.”

“What?”

“She did go to the state police.”

I froze.

“What happened?”

“She met an investigator named Frank Heller.”

“Did he help?”

“For two weeks.”

“And then?”

“He disappeared.”

My skin prickled.

“Was he killed?”

“We thought so.”

“Thought?”

Richard looked toward Daniel.

Daniel said, “He resurfaced under another name years later.”

“Whose?”

Neither man answered quickly enough.

I felt it before they said it.

Someone close.

Someone inside my life.

“Who?”

Daniel spoke.

“Harold Greene.”

The room disappeared around me for one astonishing second.

“No.”

“Frank Heller became Harold Greene in 1974.”

“That would make Harold—”

“Older than he claims.”

I thought of the gray hair.

The careful face.

The way he joked about turning seventy.

“How old is he?”

“Seventy-nine.”

“He said sixty-nine.”

“Yes.”

“Then Edward Shaw was not his father.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“Who is Harold?”

Daniel looked at me.

“The investigator your mother trusted with the evidence.”

My hands went cold.

“He didn’t fail to protect the case.”

“No.”

“He stole it.”

“Yes.”

“And then he spent twenty-eight years working for me.”

Richard said nothing.

I understood.

Harold had not infiltrated Caldwell recently.

He had been inside our story before the company existed.

The phone vibrated again.

15 MINUTES.

I picked up the Subject Twelve folder.

“Then let’s finally meet Frank Heller.”

Click
