David rode beside me. Andrew sat on my other side, his shoulder touching mine whenever we turned. address.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe\u2019s voice whispered, \u201cMartha?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone\u2019s here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My grip tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVivian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Chloe said, \u201cShe out.<\/p>\n<p>Mine had not.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the page, Dr. Keene had written:<\/p>\n<p>ONLY SUBJECT WITH PERSISTENT MEMORY RECOVERY.<\/p>\n<p>And beneath that:<\/p>\n<p>MATERNAL LINE MAY BE SIGNIFICANT.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the words.<\/p>\n<p>Maternal line.<\/p>\n<p>Not me alone.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>Vivian.<\/p>\n<p>Something inherited.<\/p>\n<p>Richard whispered, \u201cThat\u2019s what she meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were never chosen because you were convenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were chosen
