The documents authorized the reunion balance to be covered through Caldwell\u2019s hospitality account, along with additional staffing, dessert, upgraded linens, photography, extended bar service, and several expenses Brenda had removed.<\/p>\n<p>I signed the first page.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda stared at my name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha Caldwell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you signing hotel expenses?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I capped the pen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause my company has done business with this hotel for twenty-three years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed automatically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou own a laundry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression suggested she was waiting for the embarrassing part.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Robert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many rooms are on our current textile service?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour hundred eighteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd banquet inventory?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUniforms?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe downtown property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect Caldwell to service that location when it opens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The laughter vanished from Brenda\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>Robert added, \u201cCaldwell Linens &amp; Laundry also supplies several sister properties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone behind us whispered my surname.<\/p>\n<p>I untied the apron.<\/p>\n<p>I folded it carefully and placed it on the cart.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda watched every movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing came out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came to see old classmates,\u201d I said. \u201cI wasn\u2019t making a sales presentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few people laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda heard them.<\/p>\n<p>The sound hurt her because, for once, she could not control its direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let me give you that apron.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou served us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question traveled beyond her.<\/p>\n<p>The whole room wanted the answer.<\/p>\n<p>I looked around at people who had known me when I was a girl with one good dress and a mother who worked nights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a moment,\u201d I said, \u201cI wanted to know whether you could still embarrass me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda\u2019s face went blank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you handed me that apron, I was seventeen again for perhaps two seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remembered prom. I remembered my mother sewing that blue dress. I remembered walking home because I couldn\u2019t bear another minute inside that gym.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I remembered my mother working after midnight. I remembered her coming home with swollen hands and still repairing somebody else\u2019s skirt because we needed grocery money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched the folded apron.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never taught me that work was humiliating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Brenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou taught me that certain people belonged in the background.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut tonight I finally understood something you never did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe apron wasn\u2019t humiliating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour cruelty was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone clapped once.<\/p>\n<p>Then another person joined.<\/p>\n<p>The applause spread.<\/p>\n<p>I raised my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It faded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say that to win a room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert quietly removed another page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one additional confirmation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that tonight\u2019s reunion had been paid privately.<\/p>\n<p>Someone asked how much.<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou paid for the reunion?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the empty seats reserved for classmates who had died.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause some of us won\u2019t make it to the sixtieth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room changed.<\/p>\n<p>At seventy-three, mortality required no explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-seven classmates were already dead. Three more were too ill to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy Mercer, my prom date, had died twelve years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought one evening together was worth paying for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter Dalton stood slowly and raised his glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was sixteen, Martha\u2019s mother fed me twice a week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>I had not expected him to say that publicly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father disappeared for a while,\u201d Peter continued. \u201cMy mother worked evenings. I was ashamed, so I pretended everything was fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice weakened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never told anybody. Neither did Margaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter lifted his glass toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of us thought having less money meant Martha had less worth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt heat climb into my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter, sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still hate attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeeply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something loosened in the room.<\/p>\n<p>Carol admitted her family had rented the house everyone believed they owned.<\/p>\n<p>George confessed that the sports car he drove senior year belonged to an uncle.<\/p>\n<p>Linda said most of her beautiful dresses came from secondhand stores in another town and were altered by her mother.<\/p>\n<p>At seventy-three, people finally began confessing how desperately their seventeen-year-old selves had performed prosperity.<\/p>\n<p>Then Brenda spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father was broke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room quieted.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenior year.
