Stuff like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harmless questions.<\/p>\n<p>Except they were not harmless.<\/p>\n<p>A child became surveillance because adults knew how to make curiosity sound affectionate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else did he ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne year he asked whether Dad still kept the red file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ask Harold afterward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat some things were better remembered than found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold had known Samuel was still probing.<\/p>\n<p>Why did he never tell me?<\/p>\n<p>Protection again.<\/p>\n<p>Always protection.<\/p>\n<p>I loved him for it.<\/p>\n<p>I resented him for it.<\/p>\n<p>Both were true.<\/p>\n<p>At dusk, investigators traced Samuel\u2019s encrypted phone.<\/p>\n<p>One brief connection.<\/p>\n<p>Near Lake Arlen.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s at the cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teams moved.<\/p>\n<p>The property appeared empty.<\/p>\n<p>No vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>No lights.<\/p>\n<p>But fresh tracks led toward the lake.<\/p>\n<p>A small boat was missing from a neighboring dock.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel knew the area as well as Harold.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe better.<\/p>\n<p>The phone pinged again.<\/p>\n<p>Across the lake.<\/p>\n<p>Near an abandoned fishing lodge.<\/p>\n<p>Agents closed in.<\/p>\n<p>No Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Only a prepaid phone sitting on a table.<\/p>\n<p>Beside it, a red fishing bobber.<\/p>\n<p>Harold used the same kind when Daniel was a boy.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath was a note.<\/p>\n<p>DOLORES,<\/p>\n<p>HAROLD ALWAYS SAID YOU WERE THE ONE PERSON HE COULDN\u2019T FOOL.<\/p>\n<p>HE WAS WRONG.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had made his first mistake.<\/p>\n<p>He assumed the note would wound me.<\/p>\n<p>Instead it told me what mattered.<\/p>\n<p>He was angry at Harold.<\/p>\n<p>Still.<\/p>\n<p>After twenty years.<\/p>\n<p>Not merely afraid of evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Angry.<\/p>\n<p>This was personal.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the bobber.<\/p>\n<p>Then remembered something Harold once told me after the business split.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel never hated losing money.<\/p>\n<p>He hated losing face.<\/p>\n<p>That was the wound.<\/p>\n<p>Exposure.<\/p>\n<p>Humiliation.<\/p>\n<p>Being seen clearly.<\/p>\n<p>I told Agent Chen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t just want the red file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo prove Harold was wrong about him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo who is left?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That night, Samuel called.<\/p>\n<p>No disguise.<\/p>\n<p>No intermediary.<\/p>\n<p>His voice sounded older but instantly recognizable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDolores.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had not heard him in two decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found the file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold kept everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe always did enjoy being right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. He enjoyed being prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A bitter laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still defend him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what he did wrong too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That silenced him briefly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat belongs to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe file doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt concerns me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo does a criminal indictment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sound different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney does that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He wanted the lottery to explain me.<\/p>\n<p>That was easier than admitting I had changed before spending a cent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money only removed excuses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel breathed quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand what Harold did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe ruined me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stole from the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe forced me out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed the agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had no choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had several.
