I\u2019m only learning where.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I left.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, Detective Sloan waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told her about the offshore account in my name.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll verify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the post office box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>I answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found something else from Grandpa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the jewelry box with the memory card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She read slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Grandma ever learns what happened, tell her Daniel tried to call for help before Caleb stopped him. He made a terrible choice after that, but he did try once. She should know the whole truth, not only the worst part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Harold had written that before he died.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow he had known Daniel was weak.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he also knew our son was not entirely lost.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s one more line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa wrote, \u2018The truth should punish what we did, not erase everything we were.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood in the hallway holding the phone against my ear.<\/p>\n<p>For days I had been surviving on clean categories.<\/p>\n<p>Victim.<\/p>\n<p>Criminal.<\/p>\n<p>Coward.<\/p>\n<p>Traitor.<\/p>\n<p>But Harold had left me something harder than anger.<\/p>\n<p>Nuance.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had delayed help.<\/p>\n<p>He had taken money.<\/p>\n<p>He had accepted silence money later.<\/p>\n<p>All of that was true.<\/p>\n<p>He had also tried once to call.<\/p>\n<p>That was true too.<\/p>\n<p>Neither truth canceled the other.<\/p>\n<p>I found Daniel sitting alone in a secured waiting room.<\/p>\n<p>He looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaleb caught?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>I remained standing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you try to call an ambulance before he knocked your phone away?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it didn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still stopped afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still accepted money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still lied to you for four years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what difference does one call make?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Harold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe difference between truth and a story designed only to punish you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel began crying.<\/p>\n<p>I did not hug him.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps not for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>But I sat beside him.<\/p>\n<p>That was all.<\/p>\n<p>After several minutes, Sloan appeared at the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDolores.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForensics recovered the canceled federal hotline call made from Harold\u2019s phone after his death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose voice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRenata\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>But Sloan was not finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wasn\u2019t alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a second voice in the background.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaleb?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe enhanced it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She placed her phone on the table.<\/p>\n<p>The recording began.<\/p>\n<p>Renata, imitating Harold poorly.<\/p>\n<p>Then a whisper behind her.<\/p>\n<p>A man\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>Older.<\/p>\n<p>Familiar.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>So did Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Eileen\u2019s husband.<\/p>\n<p>My brother-in-law.<\/p>\n<p>Frank.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had comforted me at Harold\u2019s funeral had been in the room while Renata canceled Harold\u2019s meeting with federal investigators.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=20209\">Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Voice Behind Renata\u2019s Lie Belonged to My Sister\u2019s Husband, and Eileen\u2019s Silence Told Me She Had Been Protecting More Than Grief<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The agreement filled only two pages.
