He fell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could hear my heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he was alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel said you waited twelve minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renata\u2019s tears continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may have been longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much longer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eileen made a sound beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty minutes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched him ask for help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDolores\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Caleb come?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes closed.<\/p>\n<p>That was the answer before she spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Harold was still conscious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to hate her cleanly.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I felt something colder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Caleb do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took the papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Harold?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knelt beside him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo help?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renata began shaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sloan\u2019s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked where the blue box was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Harold?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told him to go to hell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, I could hear Harold saying it.<\/p>\n<p>Flat.<\/p>\n<p>Unimpressed.<\/p>\n<p>Furious.<\/p>\n<p>Renata continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaleb told Daniel to leave the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Not at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaleb said if we called an ambulance immediately, police would come, the fraud would be discovered, Daniel would be implicated, everyone would lose everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you waited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Caleb touch Harold?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renata hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took Harold\u2019s heart medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was on the counter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold carried nitroglycerin.<\/p>\n<p>Always.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe put the bottle in his pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand covered my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Harold had not simply been denied an ambulance.<\/p>\n<p>He had been denied medication.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRenata Fenn, I\u2019m going to advise you that\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renata looked at me wildly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sloan stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaleb called me today because Daniel remembered where the ceramic fish key was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel told him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Daniel told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was trying to bargain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Caleb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo get you left alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt anger and grief twist together.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had chosen too late to become brave.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps he had chosen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he offer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe small padlock key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renata shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaleb does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did they meet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s when the video was made?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaleb wanted the brass vault key too. Daniel told him you had it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Caleb took Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou left your husband with him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Harold, you still obeyed Caleb?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo was everybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sat tied to a chair in what looked like an empty workshop.<\/p>\n<p>Beside him stood Caleb.<\/p>\n<p>No attempt to hide his face now.<\/p>\n<p>A message followed.<\/p>\n<p>MIDNIGHT. OLD BOAT RAMP AT ARLEN.<\/p>\n<p>BRING THE BRASS KEY AND THE BLUE BOX.<\/p>\n<p>COME ALONE.<\/p>\n<p>My heart hammered.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb knew we had the box.<\/p>\n<p>Which meant someone had told him.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan read the message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can use this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are not going alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll kill Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may kill Daniel whether you comply or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the photo again.<\/p>\n<p>Behind Daniel, partly visible on the wall, hung a faded red sign.<\/p>\n<p>MERCER MARINE REPAIR.<\/p>\n<p>I pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaleb has a workshop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sloan saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renata opened her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis father\u2019s old marina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus was already reaching for his phone.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan turned toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAddress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renata gave it.<\/p>\n<p>The marina was twelve miles from Lake Arlen.<\/p>\n<p>Police moved immediately.<\/p>\n<p>I was told to stay at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>I did not.<\/p>\n<p>Eileen drove behind Marcus until a roadblock stopped us half a mile from the property.<\/p>\n<p>Darkness had fallen.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency lights flashed against the trees.<\/p>\n<p>Then gunshots cracked in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>Three.<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>One more.<\/p>\n<p>My entire body went cold.<\/p>\n<p>Eileen grabbed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes stretched.<\/p>\n<p>No one told us anything.<\/p>\n<p>Then an ambulance surged past toward the marina.<\/p>\n<p>I could not breathe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d I demanded from the nearest officer. \u201cWho is hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know, ma\u2019am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another ambulance followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sloan appeared from the darkness.<\/p>\n<p>There was blood on her sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>Not hers.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees almost gave way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing treated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Caleb?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sloan looked back toward the marina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe escaped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Daniel shot?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Caleb was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen whose blood\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of our officers grazed. Stable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief came in fragments.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel told us Caleb has been using the marina to store records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the blue box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped her arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we open it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sloan looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still don\u2019t have the padlock key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Harold.<\/p>\n<p>His habit of making backups.<\/p>\n<p>His suspicion of losing keys.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly, another memory surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>Harold teaching Daniel to fish.<\/p>\n<p>The blue tackle box sitting on the dock.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel losing a hook.<\/p>\n<p>Harold laughing and saying, \u201cA fisherman who has only one key deserves to lose his bait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold hid duplicates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could see his hands.<\/p>\n<p>The foam handle on the fishing rod.<\/p>\n<p>The tiny slit he made with a pocketknife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe handle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat handle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis old fishing rod.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eileen looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart sank.<\/p>\n<p>Not Savannah.<\/p>\n<p>Not the cabin.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen it recently.<\/p>\n<p>Leaning in the garage of Daniel\u2019s rental house.<\/p>\n<p>The house Caleb had already searched.<\/p>\n<p>Unless Caleb had overlooked something because it looked worthless.<\/p>\n<p>We drove back under police escort.<\/p>\n<p>The garage was sealed.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Harold\u2019s old rod still leaned behind a stack of paint cans.<\/p>\n<p>I took it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>The cork handle was cracked.<\/p>\n<p>Near the base was a tiny wooden plug.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus pried it free.<\/p>\n<p>A narrow brass key slid into his palm.<\/p>\n<p>The tackle box opened twenty minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were bank statements.<\/p>\n<p>Photocopies.<\/p>\n<p>Account ledgers.<\/p>\n<p>A flash drive.<\/p>\n<p>A digital voice recorder.<\/p>\n<p>And a sealed envelope addressed to me.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan photographed everything.<\/p>\n<p>Then she pressed play on the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Harold\u2019s voice filled the room.<\/p>\n<p>He sounded tired.<\/p>\n<p>But unmistakably alive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDolores, if you\u2019re hearing this, something went wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes filled instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Eileen took my hand.<\/p>\n<p>Harold continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found what Caleb and Renata have been doing. Daniel knows enough to be ashamed and not enough to understand how serious it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Then came another voice.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re blowing this up, Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Harold answered.<\/p>\n<p>No, son.
