investigator named Marcus Bell to meet us near Lake Arlen.

The cabin appeared exactly as I remembered it—weathered siding, narrow porch, trees crowding the roofline.

A black SUV was parked nearby.

A man stepped from it.

Caleb Mercer.

My phone rang almost immediately.

“Dolores,” he said.

“How did you get my number?”

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“The deed carries a signature I never wrote.”

“Go home.”

“What happened to Harold?”

Silence.

“What is in the blue tackle box?”

His silence changed.

“Where did you hear about that?”

“Harold told me.”

It was a lie.

Caleb believed it.

I knew because he whispered, “That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“He never got the chance.”

My blood went cold.

“The chance to do what?”

He hung up.

We drove away, met Marcus, then returned.

Caleb was gone.

The cabin door stood open.

Inside, someone had ripped through drawers, cupboards and floorboards.

Beside the fireplace, one wooden panel sat crooked.

I remembered Harold building a hiding space there.

Marcus removed it carefully.

The compartment appeared empty.

Then his flashlight caught an envelope wedged low inside.

My name was written across it.

DOLORES.

Inside were a brass key, a deposit receipt and a handwritten note.

Harold’s handwriting.

I read with shaking hands.

The blue box was not at the cabin.

He had moved it after discovering the transfers.

The key led to a locker.

He warned me not to trust Renata.

Not to trust Caleb.

And then came the sentence that took the air from my lungs.

If they tell you my heart simply gave out, ask why nobody called for help while I was still talking.

At the bottom, Harold wrote that everything I needed—including a recording—was inside the blue box.

Forty-two miles later, we opened the station locker identified in the note.

It was empty.

A fresh envelope had been taped inside.

It contained a photograph of a blue tackle box sitting on Daniel’s kitchen counter.

On the back:

STOP DIGGING OR DANIEL PAYS.

My phone buzzed.

A video.

Daniel sat in his kitchen with a bruised face and blood on his lip.

“Mom, don’t come back.”

A man behind the camera ordered him to continue.

Daniel swallowed.

“Forget the blue box.”

“Tell her why,” the man said.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because Dad recorded everything that night.”

The video ended.

A final message appeared.

YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT TO TRADE HAROLD’S KEY FOR YOUR SON.

Marcus looked at the brass key in my hand.

“But you already opened the locker.”

I stared at Harold’s deposit receipt.

A second number was written beneath the first.

742.

Then I noticed the business name printed across the top.

First National Safe Storage.

The station locker had never held Harold’s evidence.

It had held directions.

The real compartment was somewhere else.

Vault 742.

Whoever had Daniel still did not possess Harold’s blue box.

They needed the key.

Which meant my husband’s evidence had survived four years of lies.

I closed my fingers around the brass key.

For ten months, I had believed the lottery was the secret that changed my life.

I was wrong.

The money had only given me enough independence to start asking questions.

Harold had left the answer somewhere behind a steel door.

And the people who had watched him lie injured on our kitchen floor were now desperate enough to threaten my son to keep me from hearing it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Key They Wanted Was Useless Without Harold’s
