Steven is with me. I will explain in the morning.

Mariana replied immediately.

Mom, what happened?

Gaby turned the phone facedown.

Across the room, Romina spoke for the first time in nearly an hour.

"He told me you knew."

Gaby looked up.

Romina's mascara had smudged beneath one eye.

"Knew what?"

"That your marriage was over."

Gaby said nothing.

"He said you were basically living separate lives."

"We ate breakfast together this morning."

Romina looked down.

"He said the house would be sold and you would receive your share."

"My share."

"He said it like everything had already been arranged."

Gaby felt anger rise, but it was quieter now.

"What did you believe?"

Romina swallowed.

"Most of it."

"Why?"

"Because I wanted to."

The answer surprised Gaby.

There was no defense in it.

Romina looked toward the sleeping baby.

"I didn't know about him."

Gaby believed that much.

"I didn't know about the signature either."

"I don't know what you knew."

Romina nodded slowly.

"That's fair."

Gaby did not forgive her.

Forgiveness was too large a question for that night.

But she understood something.

Marco had distributed different versions of reality to different people.

To Gaby, he was the hardworking husband protecting her from complicated business matters.

To Romina, he was the trapped man preparing to begin a new life.

To Alma, he had once been the helpful employer willing to assist a grieving family.

Perhaps each lie worked because it contained just enough truth to feel plausible.

Near two in the morning, Steven drove Gaby home.

Alma left with Mateo.

Romina arranged her own ride.

Before she departed, she approached Gaby outside.

"I'm sorry."

Gaby looked at her.

Romina seemed to expect either fury or absolution.

Gaby gave her neither.

"Be truthful when they ask you questions."

Romina nodded.

"That's what I can use from you right now."

The ride home was nearly silent.

Streetlights passed across the windshield in slow intervals.

Gaby watched closed shops, empty sidewalks, and houses with darkened windows.

Thousands of people were sleeping through ordinary nights.

She wondered how many would wake tomorrow believing their lives were exactly what they had been yesterday.

When Steven turned onto her street, Gaby saw her house.

No lights.

Marco's car was gone.

Steven parked.

"Do you want to stay with me?"

Gaby considered it.

"No."

"You sure?"

"This is my home."

They walked to the front door.

Gaby unlocked it.

Inside, everything appeared untouched.

The spilled wine had been cleaned from the kitchen floor.

The stained tablecloth was folded beside the sink.

Marco's phone was gone.

So were several of his jackets.

Gaby checked the bedroom.

A suitcase was missing.

She opened the closet.

Marco had taken clothes, shoes, toiletries, and a small lockbox he normally kept on the upper shelf.

Steven stood in the doorway.

"What was in the box?"

"Business papers, I thought."

"You thought?"

"He handled it."

The words tasted different now.

Gaby sat on the edge of the bed.

For twenty-two years she had allowed entire territories of their shared life to become Marco's responsibility.

Not because she was foolish.

Because partnership required division of labor.

Trust made ordinary life possible.

The betrayal was not that she had trusted him.

The betrayal was that Marco had apparently converted trust into access.

Steven checked the back door and windows.

Then he returned.

"We're changing the locks."

"At two in the morning?"

"At two in the morning."

Gaby almost objected.

Then she imagined Marco returning while she slept.

"Call someone."

The locksmith arrived a little after three.

He worked beneath the porch light while Steven made coffee.

Gaby stood nearby wrapped in a cardigan.

The night air smelled faintly of damp soil.

The locksmith removed the old cylinder from the front door.

"You seem remarkably calm," he said.

Gaby watched the pieces of the old lock fall into his palm.

"I'm not calm."

He glanced at her.

"I'm decided."

He nodded as though he understood the distinction.

Perhaps he did.

By four, the locks were changed.

Steven finally convinced Gaby to lie down.

She did not sleep.

At dawn, the sky turned gray beyond the curtains.

Gaby heard a car outside.

Then another.

Mariana entered first.

She had inherited Gaby's quick stride and Marco's dark eyes. Her hair was pulled into a careless knot, and she looked as though she had dressed while running.

Diego came behind her.

"Mom?"

Gaby stood in the living room.

She had rehearsed several ways to explain.

None survived the sight of her children.

Mariana crossed the room.

"What happened?"

Gaby opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Diego saw Steven.

Then the documents.

Then the expression on his mother's face.

"Is Dad okay?"

The question broke her.

Gaby covered her mouth.

Mariana reached her first.

For almost eighteen hours Gaby had been collecting evidence, asking questions, making decisions, refusing intimidation, and forcing herself to remain useful.

Now she cried.

Not neatly.

Not quietly.

Her children held her.

Steven turned toward the window and gave them privacy.

Eventually Gaby told them.

The affair.

Romina.

Alma.

Mateo.

The money.

The loan.

The forged signature.

Mariana became furious.

Diego became frighteningly quiet.

"Where is he?" he finally asked.

"I don't know."

"I'm calling him."

"No."

"Mom—"

"No."

Diego looked at her.

Gaby wiped her face.

"We are not going to create a second disaster because we're angry about the first."

"He forged your name."

"We have reported it."

"He tried to use your house."

"And we're going to deal with that properly."

Diego paced toward the window.

Mariana sat beside Gaby.

"How long?"

"I don't know."

"How long was he with her?"

"I don't know that either."

Gaby realized how many questions remained.

Mariana took her hand.

"You're not staying alone."

"This is my house."

"That's not what I said."

Despite everything, Gaby smiled faintly.

Mariana squeezed her fingers.

For the first time since 3:17 the previous afternoon, Gaby allowed herself to feel something other than urgency.

She was hurt.

Humiliated.

Furious.

Afraid.

But she was not isolated.

Later that morning, Steven began making calls.

Banks.

The lender.

An attorney recommended by a colleague.

Gaby froze access where necessary and requested copies of records.

Each call revealed another task.

Each task made the situation feel both worse and more manageable.

Facts had edges.

Fear did not.

Three days passed without Marco returning.

He sent messages.

Some apologetic.

Some angry.

Some warning that Gaby was overreacting.

She saved every one.

Then, on the fourth afternoon, the doorbell rang.

Gaby checked the camera.

Romina stood outside.

Alone.

Gaby hesitated before opening the door.

Romina looked different.

No polished jacket.

No carefully applied lipstick.

She carried a shopping bag in one hand and a small flash drive in the other.

"I won't stay," she said.

Gaby kept one hand on the door.

"What do you want?"

"To give you this."

She held out the drive.

"What is it?"

"Everything I could find."

Gaby did not take it immediately.

Romina continued.

"Messages. Voice recordings. Names. Some documents Marco sent me."

"Why?"

"Because I finally understood what he was doing."

Gaby took the drive.

Romina placed the shopping bag on the porch.

"Those are things of yours that ended up at my place. A scarf. A serving dish. A few other things."

The absurdity almost made Gaby laugh.

Romina looked at the house behind her.

"He told me you didn't care about any of it."

"Apparently Marco had strong opinions about what I cared about."

Romina lowered her eyes.

"There's something else on the drive."

Gaby waited.

"He had a backup plan if you refused to sign."

A cold sensation moved through her chest.

"What kind of plan?"

Romina struggled to meet her eyes.

"He talked about getting someone else to sign for you again."

Gaby tightened her grip on the flash drive.

"Again?"

Romina nodded.

"And if that became impossible…"

She stopped.

"Finish the sentence."

Romina looked directly at her.

"He said there might be a way to prove you couldn't manage your own affairs."

For a moment Gaby did not understand.

Then she did.

"He wanted to declare me incompetent?"

"He talked about making you look confused. Unreliable. He said if enough people believed you weren't capable of handling money, someone else could eventually control the decisions."

Gaby's fingers went numb around the drive.

The affair had wounded her.

The forged signature had frightened her.

But this was different.

Marco had apparently considered attacking the very thing Gaby had relied upon since the first message appeared on his phone.

Her own judgment.

Romina whispered, "I didn't know where it was going at first."

Gaby looked at her.

"You helped him."

"Yes."

The admission came without qualification.

"But I didn't understand all of it."

"No. You understood the parts that benefited you."

Romina's eyes filled.

"Yes."

Gaby appreciated the answer more than another excuse.

Romina turned to leave.

"Gaby?"

"What?"

"He never planned a future with me the way I thought."

Gaby said nothing.

"I think I was useful."

Gaby studied her.

Then she spoke quietly.

"You weren't chosen, Romina."

Romina's face tightened.

"You were recruited."

The words landed heavily.

Romina nodded once and walked toward her car.

Gaby closed the door.

She carried the flash drive into the kitchen and placed it beside her laptop.

Sunlight fell across the counter where Marco's forgotten phone had been charging four days earlier.

The house was silent.

Gaby inserted the drive.

Folders appeared on the screen.

Recordings.

Messages.

Financial documents.

Photographs.

One folder contained her name.

GABRIELA.

She opened it.

Inside were files she had never seen, copies of identification documents, notes about her accounts, and a document whose creation date went back much farther than she expected.

Gaby stared at the date.

Marco's plans had not begun with Romina.

They had begun years earlier.

She reached for her phone.

This time she did not call Steven first.

She called her attorney.

"I have new evidence," she said.

Then Gaby opened the oldest file bearing her name.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Oldest File on Marco’s Drive Proved His Scheme Began Before Romina—and Before Gaby Ever Suspected a Thing

The official report took hours.
