right.”

Ortiz said nothing.

I looked again.

Dr. Elaine Mercer.

The district's respected child-development consultant.

The woman who had helped design behavior policies used across several schools.

Then the surname struck me.

Mercer.

I looked at Ortiz.

“No.”

She understood immediately.

Hayes closed the folder.

“Dana Mercer is her daughter.”

For several seconds I could hear only the fluorescent lights above us.

Dana.

The CPS worker who had interviewed Kaylee.

The woman who knew where Kaylee and Caleb had been placed.

The woman who knew protective addresses.

The woman who knew where my family had been moved.

My knees weakened.

“Where is Dana?”

Ortiz reached for her phone.

No one answered.

Again.

Still nothing.

Hayes spoke into his radio.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Mrs. Pruitt sat in a metal chair, her wrists bound.

Beside her stood Kaylee.

Alive.

Terrified.

Behind them was a concrete wall streaked with rust.

At the bottom of the photograph was one sentence.

BRING BACK WHAT THE GIRL STOLE.

I stared at it.

“But they already took the card.”

Hayes looked over my shoulder.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He enlarged the image.

Mrs. Pruitt's right hand was closed tightly despite the restraints.

Between two fingers, almost hidden, was a corner of white plastic.

Hayes looked at me.

“The card they took was a copy.”

“Then where is the real one?”

My phone rang.

Mrs. Pruitt's number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then I heard breathing.

A woman's voice whispered so quietly I almost missed it.

“Claire?”

I recognized her.

“Dana?”

Silence.

Then Dana Mercer said, “Don't trust my mother.”

The line went dead.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Dana’s Warning Forced Us to Question Every Safe Place, While Kaylee Quietly
