Control their mail, their phones, their explanation of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, Kaylee hugged Mia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you still coming to my birthday?\u201d Mia asked.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee glanced at Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca wiped her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Kaylee wants to go, she&#39;ll be there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood,\u201d Mia said. \u201cMom already ordered chocolate cake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hadn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>I ordered one that night.<\/p>\n<p>At 9:14, I returned home after almost forty hours without real sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Popcorn bowls remained in the sink.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee&#39;s sweatshirt was still on the couch.<\/p>\n<p>A purple bottle of nail polish sat uncapped on the coffee table.<\/p>\n<p>I sank onto the kitchen floor.<\/p>\n<p>Mark called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI keep thinking about the two hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat two hours?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ones when I knew something was wrong and kept telling myself she wasn&#39;t my child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat finally changed your mind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was more frightened of going home than she was of being hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three days later, Detective Ortiz called.<\/p>\n<p>She had identified the man Kaylee remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Caldwell.<\/p>\n<p>Greg&#39;s boss.<\/p>\n<p>His development company had built subdivisions throughout the county. Caldwell sponsored youth sports, donated to schools, and appeared smiling in fundraising photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Police had executed a warrant.<\/p>\n<p>They had found a list of children&#39;s names.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee was on it.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb was on it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ortiz said, \u201cThere&#39;s another name you need to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMia Harper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment I couldn&#39;t understand the words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy Mia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAge eight. Briar Creek Elementary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ran to my daughter&#39;s bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>She sat on the carpet building a LEGO horse stable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMia, has Tasha ever spoken to you when I wasn&#39;t there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat games I like. Whether I sleep at Kaylee&#39;s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mia thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked if you work Saturdays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called Ortiz back immediately.<\/p>\n<p>After I told her, she ordered us not to leave the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found photographs connected to the list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly taken in public places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Mia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a photograph of your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then someone pounded on my front door.<\/p>\n<p>Three hard knocks.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed Mia and moved her away from the windows.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz shouted through my phone, \u201cDon&#39;t open it until you know who&#39;s there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A man&#39;s voice called from outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBriar Creek Police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I checked the camera first.<\/p>\n<p>Two uniformed officers.<\/p>\n<p>When I opened the door, one entered while the other circled the property.<\/p>\n<p>The first officer held a clear evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a folded note.<\/p>\n<p>My name had been handwritten across it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder your windshield wiper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My car hadn&#39;t moved since the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#39;s inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the bag.<\/p>\n<p>I read the sentence through the plastic.<\/p>\n<p>You should have minded your own child.<\/p>\n<p>Mia stood behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pulled her against my chest.<\/p>\n<p>At that moment I understood that Kaylee had never carried danger into our home.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had already been watching.<\/p>\n<p>And whoever had left that note knew I was the adult who had looked at a pair of pink sneakers and refused to look away.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=20050\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Threat Outside My House Led Police Back to Mia&#8217;s School, Where Someone Had Been Quietly Building a List<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By 7:31 Saturday morning, Kaylee was sitting on the blue couch in Mrs. Fox&#39;s counseling office with Mia&#39;s stuffed llama clamped against her chest.
