gone.”

David lifted the pistol toward Rachel.

Michael’s face changed.

“Don’t.”

“So there is leverage.”

Grace stepped toward the camera.

“David.”

He looked at her image.

“You want data?”

She held up a small vial.

My blood.

A fresh collection.

Michael must have drawn another sample before we left.

David stared.

Grace said, “Let Mom go.”

“Bring it down.”

“No.”

“Grace.”

“No.”

His face hardened.

“You don’t know how unstable that material is.”

“Then you should have planned better.”

Leah looked impressed.

Rachel almost smiled.

David pointed the gun toward the ceiling.

“Bring it down.”

Grace shook her head.

“You let Mom walk upstairs first.”

“She can barely walk.”

“Then I come get her.”

“No.”

Grace looked at the camera.

“Why?”

David did not answer.

And I suddenly understood.

“He’s afraid of you.”

Grace stared through the camera.

David turned toward me.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Of what?”

I looked toward the monitor.

“Of being outnumbered by people who won’t behave like subjects.”

David’s hand tightened.

Then Rachel moved.

Fast.

Faster than I thought she could.

She kicked the rolling stool beside her.

It slammed into David’s knee.

His gun hand dropped.

I the vial in one hand.

“Enough.”

David stared at her.

Not the gun.

Not Michael.

Grace.

She stepped closer.

“You wanted a look.”

She pointed toward Leah.

“Same DNA.”

Then Michael.

“Different father.”

Then me.

“Different many.

Rachel’s blood.

Tumor tissue.

Grace’s old sample.

Leah’s.

Mine.

And another vial.

Michael stared.

“What?”

He picked it up carefully.

The label read:

S.W. — cardiac tissue.

My stomach at me.

“It means Harlan paired the wrong branches.”

I stared.

“What?”

“He thought your daughters were the endpoint.”

His
