from another shelf.

“You need to see this.”

A cassette tape sat in an evidence bag.

Handwritten label:

SAMUEL / HARLAN — RE: DANIEL & RACHEL.

The forensic technician found an old recorder in the room.

After photographing and logging the cassette, Ortiz allowed playback.

Static filled the basement.

Then my father’s voice.

You leave the boy out of this.

I gripped the shelf.

Harlan answered.

The pairing is already established.

I don’t care.

You cared when you took the money.

That was before I knew who the girl was.

Silence.

Then Samuel again.

She’s Evelyn’s niece.

Half-niece, Harlan corrected.

Same bloodline.

Precisely.

My father swore.

Harlan continued.

The probability of inheritance increases if both branches—

They’re kids.

They’re adults.

They don’t know what you’re doing.

They don’t need to.

My father’s voice became low.

If you touch Daniel, I bury you.

The tape clicked.

Then Harlan laughed.

You’ve been saying that for fifteen years.

Another click.

My father said:

I’ll tell him everything.

And lose him?

Silence.

Harlan had found the weapon that controlled everyone.

Truth.

Not because truth itself was dangerous.

Because people feared what truth would cost them.

The recording continued.

Samuel finally said, What do you want?

Harlan answered:

Let them marry.

My stomach turned.

Let nature do the rest.

The tape ended.

Nobody spoke.

My father had known.

He had objected.

Then he had surrendered.

Maybe from fear.

Maybe shame.

Maybe cowardice.

Whatever the reason, he had allowed Harlan to keep watching.

A forensic technician removed another box.

Inside were photographs from my wedding.

Anna had said David watched from across the street.

Apparently Harlan had watched too.

I found one photograph of Rachel and me leaving the church.

On the back:

PAIRING FORMALIZED.

I nearly tore it.

Ortiz caught my wrist.

“Evidence.”

I released it.

Then Michael found a thin folder hidden beneath the wedding photographs.

No label.

Inside was a single medical report.

Rachel Shaw.

Pregnancy confirmed.

Date.

I calculated.

Rachel had been barely six weeks pregnant.

Months before she told Elaine.

Months before Samuel sent me to Oklahoma City.

“How did Harlan know this early?”

Michael read the laboratory name.

“St. Anne’s.”

Rachel had gone there once after fainting at work.

She told me it was dehydration.

Apparently they had run blood tests.

“Harlan knew before Rachel knew.”

Michael nodded.

Then I saw the final handwritten note.

Twin probability elevated.

Prepare separation protocol if confirmed.

I stared.

They had planned to separate our children before anyone knew there were two.

I turned the page.

Another line.

If only one viable infant, retain for longitudinal study.

If twins viable, divide environments.

My hands began shaking.

Grace and Leah had never been accidents.

Not their separation.

Not their adoption.

Not the lies afterward.

The experiment had been waiting for them.

Then Ortiz pulled another document from the folder.

“Daniel.”

It was dated one week before the twins were born.

Signed by Harlan.

Approved by someone identified only as D.M.

I stared at the initials.

David Mercer would have been five years old.

Not him.

“Who is D.M.?”

Michael took the paper.

His face changed.

“I know.”

“Who?”

He looked toward the hidden room.

“Dr. Douglas Mercer.”

Anna’s father.

David’s grandfather.

I stared.

“Another Mercer.”

Michael nodded.

“He ran St. Anne’s pathology department.”

My stomach dropped.

“So Anna’s family was involved too.”

Michael looked at me.

“Not just involved.”

He held up the authorization.

“Douglas Mercer approved the twin-separation protocol.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: Douglas Mercer’s Signature Revealed the Experiment Spanned Three
